Histori

Since Toyota had established itself in the North American compact pickup truck market from the 1980s to the 1990s, it seems logical that Toyota needs to take part in the lucrative large pickup truck market. Reported over the years before, the Toyota T100 1993 boasts a full sized pickup bed (8 feet) but maintains the engine and suspension settings of its smaller and older sibling, the compact Toyota Pickup Truck. Though the T100 was slightly larger than the competitive midsize Dodge Dakota and the compact Ford Ranger pickup truck at the time, it was still much smaller than the big American pickup truck at the time. This means the T100 occupies its own niche in the truck market. Though economical, reliable and practical, in the grand scheme of things, the failed T100 did not succeed in mastering the market as Toyota expected. Many critics who maintain the T100 are still too small, though larger than the Toyota Pickup Truck and Toyota Tacoma compact trucks, for the full size segment.

Despite the sluggish sales, T100 sales reached a mid-range of 40,000 vehicles sold (1996) in the United States. Sales of General Motors C/K Trucks were around 700,000 per year, while Ford F-Series sales jumped from 550,000 to nearly 850,000 and Dodge went from 100,000 to 400,000 with the introduction of the new Dodge Ram in 1993. T100 sales dropped about 30% when the new Ram entered market half a year or so after the launch of the T100.

Criticism

After its introduction, T100 was criticized for several reasons. The first is too small to attract buyers from a full-size work truck, the second is the lack of xtracab versions and the third and perhaps the most important criticism, is the lack of a V8 engine with the only available engine being from a small 3.0 liter V6 powerplant already found in Toyota's compact truck and at 4Runner. Despite criticism by many, Toyota stated these are all factors considered when designing and producing the T100. They claim that smaller sizes are planned to offer larger trucks with compact "taste", Xtracab is on the horizon and the 3.0 liter V6 will provide a much better fuel economy than any vehicle it aspires to compete.

Beyond the matter of size and horsepower, the T100 does receive media praise, obtaining the JD Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey, the "Full Full-Pickup" award and the "Best of What's New" award by Popular Science magazine in its first year on the market. The T100 was the first cars or trucks - ever to receive the "Initial Quality Survey Award" in its first year of production. For 1994 (second truck model year) and 1995 (third) T100 once again given "Best Full-Size Pickup in Initial Quality" by J.D. Power and Associates. In 1997, the T100 was awarded the "Top Three Vehicles in Initial Quality - Full Size Segment" once again by J.D. Power and Associates.

Design

When introduced, the T100 has one cab configuration, regular cabs, and one available engine, 3.0 V6 L with 150 hp (112 kW) and 180 mb (244 M) torsion. In 1993, a 2.7 L I4 engine with 150 hp (112 kW) (like 3.0 V6) and 177 lb? Ft (240Ã, N? M) torque is added in the hope that new buyers will be attracted by bigger promises. fuel economy and lower prices (from previous models). Toyota finally realized that there was no alternative but to add power to the truck and in 1995 Toyota added 190 hp (142 kW) and 220 lb ft (298 N m) of torque of 3.4 L V6. The Xtra Cab model came several months into the 1995 model as well. T100 received only minor changes along the way, apart from engine changes and the addition of Xtra Cab. Driver side airbag mounted for MY 1994 (passenger side airbag was never available), and a larger 16-inch rim became the norm for most 4X4 models started in 1996. It was proven in late 1996/early 1997 that Toyota had invested in trucks next (which eventually became the Toyota Tundra). At that time (the late 1990s) many believed that the revamped T100 was on the way (with the promise of a V8 engine) and there were reports that transformed the V8-powered T100 as a test-mule, but it never happened, and Toyota returned to the drawing board and the Toyota Tundra appeared.

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) introduced a supercharger for a 3.4 liter engine in 1996 and became available for T100, Tacoma and 4Runner with 3.4 liter V6 (and later Tundra). Horsepower jumped to a range of 260 hp (194 kW) (depending on the generation of the supercharger) and  250 (339 N m m) up to 265 lb ft (359 N Nm) of torque. This power plug is only available for my 1997-1998 T100s only. Previously 3.4 V6 powered T100s have different computer and electrical layouts that do not support TRD devices.

T100 is manufactured and partly engineered by Toyota-a subsidiary of Hino. Three thin lines are offered: the base model, DX , and the top line SR5 . The maximum drawing capacity is 5,200 pounds (2,360 kg) and the truck has a charge limit of 2,450 pounds. Although most trucks fell within the 1/2 tonne area, the 1-ton model was offered (in the form of 2 wheel drive) for the previous few years until it finally fell due to lack of interest.

For the first three years of the T100 model, they were assembled in Tokyo, Japan. The T100 was the last Japanese Toyota pickup made for North America when in 1996 Toyota transferred its T100 production to the United States with the opening of a new Toyota Tundra Gibson County, Indiana plant. Some 1997 T100 is made in Japan. The US retail price of T100 built entirely in Japan includes a 25% import tariff. The T100 was discontinued in 1998 and replaced by a larger V8-powered Tundra.
