An automatic serial number announcement ( ANAC ) is a component of the phone company's headquarters that provides service to installation and service technicians to determine the phone number of a channel. The facility has a phone number that can be called to listen to an automatic announcement that includes the caller's phone number.

The ANAC number is particularly useful during landline installations to quickly identify one of several paths.

Operation

A technician dials a local phone number from an automated number announcement service. This call is connected to equipment at a local headquarters using a voice synthesizer or digital sample to announce the phone number of the incoming calling channel. The main purpose of this system is to enable telephone company technicians to identify the connected telephone lines for.

The automated number announcement system is based on automatic number identification, and is intended for telephone company technicians, the ANAC system works with unlisted numbers, numbers with caller ID blocking, and numbers without outgoing calls are allowed. A multi-line business service installer where outgoing calls from all lines show the company's primary number on the call view can use ANAC to identify specific rows within the system, even if CID displays each row as "one line".

Some ANACs are either regionally or locally within the scope, while others are state/province- or broad-coded: there seems to be no consistent national system for them. Most are special providers. Each telephone company, whether large or small, determines its own ANAC for each individual head office, which tends to perpetuate the current situation of overlapping areas and/or spots. There is no official list of ANAC numbers issued because the telephone company believes the excessive use of these numbers can make them busier when needed by the installer.

958 local test exchange

Under the North American Numbering Plan, most of the North American region of the backup phone number code begins with 958 and 959 for internal and internal long distance testing (respectively) sometimes called crop testing. (One exception is Winnipeg, which has only 959 backup). The numbers in this block are used for various test utilities such as ringback numbers (to test the rings when installing phone sets), milliwatt tones (numbers only answer with continuous test tones) and loop around (which connects calls to other incoming calls to test numbers the same or the other). The ANAC numbers can also appear in the range 958 , but there is no requirement that they be there.

In some area codes, several additional prefixes have been provided for test purposes, in addition to the 958 and 959 standards. Many area codes are protected 999; 320 was also previously reserved in the territory of Bell Canada. Due to widespread inefficiencies in numbering (such as assigning an entire block of 10,000 numbers to each competing operator in each small village to support a local number portability scheme) has created a shortage of available quantities, these prefixes are often "reclaimed" and issued as standard exchanges, moving some number in it to one standard test exchange (usually 958).

Some operators have been known to disable public phone calls to 958 or 959 test paths, such as the Bell Canada wide system ANAC line in (area code) 958-2580 . In contrast, the standard line where voice services have been unsubscribed (such as the ADSL dry loop) can still receive calls to 958 test exchanges but does not allow calls to standard numbers. This "soft-cutting" condition is meant to allow calls to emergency services 9-1-1 and to the telecommunications business office to order phone service, but no other number.

Toll-free number

Some major phone companies have set up toll-free numbers. In most cases, these numbers are kept secret to prevent abuse, but MCI maintains this much-publicized ANAC, toll-free: 1-800-437-7950 . This differs from technical support and other lines that use ANI so that the computer can automatically display a customer's account on the "pop screen" for the next available customer service representative: the MCI number is intended exclusively for the use of ANAC.

Previously, some companies changed their ANAC number each month for confidentiality; this still happens with some numbers. In one example of this problem, most public phones in the United States are numbered and can ring if the number is dialed. The phone can then be used to make and receive calls by anyone, making it a potential tool in anonymous criminal activities such as drug trafficking. Where the pay phone does not have a number listed in the unit, the number can be found by contacting the ANAC service.

By the end of the 20th century, caller ID and prepaid phone service became commonplace. This service is more easily exploited for criminal purposes, the abuse of this phone abuse is fading from attention. In Canada, this behavior is always more difficult. As a matter of course, incoming calls to pay phones are disabled; Furthermore, the ANAC Bell number is also disabled (even though the phone number is marked on the public phone itself as it is required to report a malfunctioning coin phone to a 6-1-1 repair service).

There are some national private toll-free numbers that use ANI and then have the computer reread the number being called, but this is not meant to be used in identifying the customer's own phone number. They are used for agents in the call center to confirm the calling of customers, so the computer can automatically display the customer's account on the "pop screen" for the next available customer service representative; they differ from the toll-free ANAC numbers created based on the purpose. Regardless, if someone calls one of these numbers, listens to the confirmation number and closes it, they will apply using this system as if it were ANAC.

One of the toll-free services such as those owned by MCI - 1-800-444-4444. This number (US only) is easy to remember and, when called, will reread the number after a very short message. A suspended line (not working) or an incoming line alone will not be able to reach any toll-free number.

ANAC Numbers

These figures appear on various lists that are circulated on-line, many from the 1980s and 1990s. Most of it was published last year by Phrack, 2600 Magazine, alt.2600 Usenet newsgroup (as part of the FAQ) or phone phreak and it is now out of date. The information is unreliable, as the numbers change frequently. Many registered numbers are no longer working.

This list is presented by area code, number and location. In some areas, there are several numbers, depending on the telephone company or the area code of the caller, as there are several headquarters serving several areas.

United States

The North American Numbering Plan has 958-XXXX and 1-NPA-959-XXXX for local and remote test numbers in almost all US and Canadian area codes.

Often, prefixes outside the 958 or 959 ranges (such as 200, 997, 998, 999) are also listed as test exchanges, only to be reclaimed and issued as standard block of numbers later on. The code report used by NANPA will show 'UA' (not recognizable) for a valid test prefix; if a previously new 'UA' code appears in the list provided or becomes an active exchange, any previous test number of the time as the reserved prefix is considered invalid and is no longer in use. N11 prefixes such as 211, 311 and 511 also disappear as test numbers because these codes are transferred to local services such as cities, communities or highway information.

958, 959 test prefix
The default location for test numbers in most NANP area codes, although certain local numbers vary. 1-NPA-959 traditionally contains remote test numbers, but these conventions are often ignored; AT & amp; T 959-1122 and GTE (Verizon) 959-1114 are local. Some area code will mark the additional code as 'UA' or can not be released, in some cases save it for the test number.

Some numbers 958 or 959 are commonly used for major ground operators:

  • 958, as a three-digit number in many areas of the NYNEX/Atlantic Bell, now Verizon or FairPoint (207 Maine, 212 New York, 215 Pennsylvania, 315 New York, 413 Massachusetts, 508 Massachusetts, 516 New York, 603 New Hampshire, 609 New Jersey, 610 Pennsylvania, 617 Massachusetts, 718 New York, 732 New Jersey, 856 New Jersey, 958 New Jersey)
  • 959-1114 Verizon, for all former GTE points in California (area code 310, 714, 760, 805); also Southwestern Virginia (276), Farmersburg/North Terre Haute/South Terre Haute/Riley Indiana (812) and Durham, North Carolina (919)
  • 959-1122 PacBell (AT & amp; T), all points (California area code 209, 213, 310, 408, 415, 510, 530, 619, 650, 714, 760, 805, 831, 909, 916 and 925)
  • 959-1122 Southwestern Bell (AT & amp; T), (417 Missouri, 620 Kansas, 816 Missouri, 913 Kansas, 817 Texas, 972 Texas, and 682 Texas)

Please note that it is always better to call the local ANAC; only if the local ANAC number can not be called, it is advisable to call the toll-free ANAC number. It is also better to call ANAC open rather than the password-protected given below.

  • 1-800-444-4444 MCI ANAC (no input required)
  • 1-800-437-7950 MCI ANAC (no input required) (Verified April 2018)

  • 1-800-660-2626, 1-800-288-2020 AT & T Customer Service (Verified April 2018)

Canada

Current use of exchange prefixes for each area code listed by CNAC; if the exchange changes from "cropping test" to reclamation or active, all previous test numbers with the corresponding prefix will be refreshed. Test numbers commonly used for major carriers include:

  • 555-0311 Rogers (403 Alberta, 519 613 Ontario)
  • 958-2580 Bell Canada (519 613 705 905 Ontario, 450 418 438 514 579 581 819 873 Quebec)
  • 958-ANAC (958-2622) Bell Canada (416 Toronto) (invalid from WIND Mobile)
  • 958-6111 Telus Land (403 780 Alberta, 250 BC)
  • 959-4444 Manitoba Telecom Services (204 MB) (959 used since 958 is a regular Winnipeg exchange, not a test prefix)
  • 958-9999 Bell Aliant (506 NB, 709 NL)
  • 958-2222 Eastlink

Additional plant test code may be used locally in some areas:

  • 403: 555-0311 Alberta (GroupTel - can work in other parts of Canada - not tested)
  • 604: 1116 British Columbia (Telus)
  • 604: 1211 British Columbia (Telus)
  • 819: 959-1135 Most of the Outaouais (Bell Canada) region

Sometimes, a number in a standard local exchange that exists in the area is used. This will generate a toll (and may not work) outside of their home area. Some may announce caller ID, which is not the same as ANI. As standard local calls, they are not accessible from ADSL "dry loop", inbound-only or unsubscribed lines:

  • 403: 705-0311 Calgary, Alberta (Allstream - assigns "outgoing calls as outgoing calls" in other parts of Canada, identifies as Stream)
  • 416: 477-0034 Toronto, Ontario (Fibernetics - Verified April 2018)
  • 416: 477-0035 Toronto, Ontario (Fibernetics - verified 2016; this number lets you leave a message for an undetermined reason)
  • 416: 981-0001 Toronto, Ontario (verified July 2010) (busy, September 2015)
  • 418: 380-0099 Quebec City (VidÃÆ' Â © autron - verified 2017)
  • 867: 873-0000 Yellowknife, NWT (Northwestel - verified 2012)
  • 905: 310-3789 Mississauga, ON (Now no longer includes a loop line or a ringback) In the NPA where Bell Canada is an incumbent, 310-xxxx is assigned as a pseudo-tollfree exchange that can be called at the local calling rate of the entire area code.)

In the Bell Canada area, 1-areacode-320 was previously reserved for the 320-xxxx test number; this was moved to the range of 958-xxxx and 320-xxxx reclaimed for use as a standard exchange. The use of N11 prefixes (such as 3-1-1) for test numbers is also no longer valid because 3-1-1 now often reach city hall or municipal services while 2-1-1 is local community information.

Some lists incorrectly call 1-555-1313 as ANAC (506 New Brunswick). Goal 1-areacode-555-1313, a reverse search information service "pay-per-use" name introduced in the mid-1990s, is different from ANAC. ANAC announces its own telephone number; reverse search gives the directory name to enter the phone number registered by the user. 555-1313 is one of the rare uses of the 555 exchange for apart from the standard 555-1212 directory information line.

United Kingdom

  • 17070, Linetest BT Facility
  • 020 8759 9036, the same recording as 17070 but useful on LLU and cable channels where function 17070 is limited. Unable to use on phone.
  • 0808 170 7788, it does have a long introductory message, but it is useful on COCOT that has 17070 limits.
  • 18866, The same recording as 0808 170 7788 but a shorter amount to remember.
  • 020 8180 3803, The same recording as 0808 170 7788. This number is prepared by companies offering low cost calls in the UK, these numbers are intended to be used as a kind of operator directed through in order to qualify for this cheap call. However, if this phone number is contacted from already registered with this company then it will not announce the number.

Ireland

  • 19 9000

The service announces line numbers on all Eir lines, including channels where calls are made by other operators using operator selection. The same number also works for Smart Telecom channels provided by local loop repeats.

This number is called without leading 0. For example, 021 XXX XXXX is read back as "21 XXX XXXX".

There is also an expanded ANAC service to identify which carrier handles the call. Calling this number will cause a local switch to announce which carrier the call is diverted for a particular call category.

  • 19 800 - International calls
  • 19 822 - Local calls
  • 19 801 - Calls to other parts of the Republic of Ireland, Ireland phone numbers and to landlines in Northern Ireland.
