Google's My Tracks App Gets Google Fit Integration | TalkAndroid.com

MyTracks is a GPS tracking app running on Android. This app uses a device GPS to collect data, enabling real-time path, speed, distance, and altitude review. Then, this data can be saved to Google Maps, Google Fusion Tables, or Google Docs and shared with Google, Facebook or Twitter. The app also allows users to record annotations along the path, regularly hear voice announcements, and sync with third-party bio-metric sensors.

Google has announced that as of May 1, 2016, MyTracks will be discontinued and no longer available on the Google Play Store. The app itself continues to work and is still available for broadcast via the APK repository.

In-app pop-ups let users know that MyTracks will stop working on April 30, 2016; Google has confirmed that it will invest in "a wider range of other mapping projects".

History

The app debuted on February 12, 2009 under a closed license. A year later on March 28, 2010, Google announced the release of the source code and flipped through the app, stating "The collective community's collective intelligence will create stronger, more intuitive, more useful, and more resilient than I. Tracks." first came on July 13, 2012 when Google released version 2.0 of the app. Version 2.0 introduces a new interface, support for playing back data in Google Earth for Android (although this feature is broken since Google Earth v8), improved graphics, and additional statistics. In 2014 developers announce on the google code project site that My Tracks is no longer developed in the open and the source will be deleted on 01/01/2015. The latest open source version is 2.0.5 released in August 2013.

Reception

Starting September 2013, the Google Play Store lists apps installed on 10,000,000 - 50 million devices, with an overall rating of 4.4/5 from 80,000 reviews. CNET gave the 4/5 star app, praising "Charts, Statistics, and satellite playback" and the ability to pause recording but criticize it for "uninteresting interfaces" and lack of "special athletic features". PCWorld delivers MyTracks with a perfect 5/5 star, which states "this app is almost perfect. It's intuitive to use and very stable." However, PCWorld mentioned they wanted to see some added features.
