History

Zoom was founded in 2011 by key engineers from Cisco Systems and its collaborative business unit, WebEx. The founder, Eric S. Yuan, graduated from the Stanford University executive program and previously was vice president of engineering at Cisco for collaborative software development. David Berman, from WebEx and Ring Central, became president in November 2015. The service began in January 2013 and in May 2013, claiming one million participants. During its first year of release, Zoom built partnerships with B2B collaboration software providers. The partnership with Redbooth (then known as Teambox) plays a role in adding video components to Redbooth. Shortly after this partnership, Zoom created a program called "Working with Zoom", which formed partnerships with many hardware and software vendors such as Logitech, Vaddio, and InFocus. Towards the end of the year, Zoom successfully integrates its software into InterviewStream, a company that provides remote video interview capacity to employers. Interview flow extends their video interview capabilities using the Zoom video service.

On December 11, 2013, Centrify Corporation announced it will integrate Microsoft Active Directory compatibility, access control, and single sign-on (SSO) with the Zoom app. On March 17, 2014, Zoom added the ability for participants to join the meeting by calling the toll-free call phone network through its partnership with Voxbone. Released version 3.5 later this year added a mobile screen share to mobile devices running iOS.

As of June 2014, the number of Zoom participants has increased to 10 million. Beginning in February 2015, the number of participants using Zoom Video Communication's main product - Meeting of Reforms - reached 40 million people, with 65,000 subscription organizations. On February 4, 2015, Zoom Video Communications received $ 30 million in Series C funding. Highlights include organizing more than 20 billion annual meetings (up from 6.9 billion last year), opening overseas offices in Sydney and the UK, increasing year-on-year revenue by 150% and customer base by 100%, partnering and optimizing integration with Polycom, Crestron, and Cisco, and introducing new features and enhancements to its platform including Zoom Rooms Scheduling Display and Zoom for Telehealth. In addition, Zoom ranked 18th on the Forbes Cloud 100 list and scored 4.8/5 on Gartner Peer Insights.

On November 8, 2017, Zoom announced that Kelly Steckelberg, former CEO of Zoosk and CFO of Cisco's WebEx Division, had joined Zoom as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Zoom aims for software parity and support across three PC platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Initially, Zoom featured the ability to hold conferences with up to 15 video participants. On January 25, 2013, the product was upgraded to allow up to 25 video participants for all meetings. Version 2.5 of the software further extends the offer that allows up to 100 participants of the video in one conference. The company has expanded its offerings to include meetings with up to 500 video participants. Zoom relies on client-side encryption using the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm (AES 256) for presentation content. As of October 2015, the lower limit of 25 participants in video meetings has been increased to 100. Between 2015 and mid-2016, Zoom Video Communications announced native support for Skype for Business and integration with Slack.

Reception

Initially, early adopters such as Walt Mossberg worried that Zoom quality could suffer as more users joined the pool. In 2012, Zoom "only about 1,000 people use the service". According to Mossberg, "it's possible that if millions use it, speed and quality can suffer". In his review in The Wall Street Journal, he points out that "Zoom is an interesting alternative" for Skype or Google Hangouts. Privacy Policy

The Zoom service does not record visual or audio content from meetings unless a cloud recording is requested by the customer during a meeting. Zoom is not, but it stores various metadata about each meeting such as meeting title, duration, visualization, attendance time and written messages and shared files.
