Burner is a mobile app for iOS and Android created by Ad Hoc Labs, Inc. which allows users to create temporary disposable phone numbers in the US and Canada. This app allows smartphone users to have anonymous and discardable phone numbers, for purposes such as online advertising, on the go, for business projects, or for dating profiles. Burner is a product of Ad Hoc Labs, an Atwater Village, a software based in Los Angeles.

The app name is a reference to the so-called "mobile burner," a frequently replaced prepaid mobile phone. Mobile Burner has been used to control costs, reduce contractual obligations, and provide a level of privacy in the use of mobile phones. They have been used in popular culture by drug traffickers at The Wire , spies at Burning Notice , and agents at Mission: Impossible . The Company has declared to comply with law enforcement requests but will require a valid search warrant.

History

The Burner app was launched in August 2012 with angel investors including Techstars founder David Cohen and Dave McClure's super angel in October 2012. The iPhone app was released in August 2012, followed by the Android version in April 2013. In October 2013, Ad Hoc Labs raised a funding round institutional led by Founder Collective and Venrock, with participation of 500 Startups, Miramar Digital Ventures, TenOneTen Ventures and others. In an interview with Ars Technica, CEO Greg Cohn stated "we definitely think that communication, and special telephony, has been abandoned by the wave of social innovation that has taken place." Networks should be smarter, more social-conscious and more privacy-conscious. " stated that Long-term vision for Burner is to build a technology where phone numbers are smarter and act more like software.

Features

Burner allows users to make phone calls and VoIP calls as well as send SMS and MMS messages via phone numbers issued through the application. Users can purchase credits for temporary numbers or add additional lines for ongoing subscription fees. The Burner Connections feature, launched in October 2015, allows users to integrate their Burner numbers with third-party applications such as Slack, Google Spreadsheet, Dropbox, Evernote, and SoundCloud. This function allows people to automatically archive SMS and image messages, automatic program responses, sync voice messages, and more. In November 2015, Burner launched a way for developers to connect applications with various applications, such as IFTTT, or create new custom integration through the use of webhooks.
