" Home on the Range " is a Western classical song sometimes called the "unofficial song" of West America. The original lyrics were written by Dr. Brewster M. Higley of Smith County, Kansas, in a poem titled "My Western Home" in 1872. In 1947, it became a US state song in Kansas. In 2010, Western Writers of America members voted it one of the 100 best Western songs of all time.

Histori

In 1871, Higley moved from Indiana to Smith County, Kansas, under Homestead Law. He lives in a small cabin near West Beaver Creek. He was so inspired by his new rural environment that he decided to make a poem to praise the meadow. Thus, the lyrics of "Home on the Range" were originally published as a poem published in Smith County Pioneer in 1872 under the title "My Western Home".

The music was later added by Daniel E. Kelley (1808-1905), a carpenter and friend of Higley. Higley's original words resemble the modern version of the song, but not identical; the original does not contain the words "in range". The song was eventually adopted by breeders, cowboys and other western settlers and spread across the United States in various forms. In 1925, the song was organized as a sheet of music by Texas composer David W. Guion (1892-1981), who is sometimes credited as a composer. The song has passed with a number of names, the most common being "Home on the Range" and "Western Home". It was officially adopted as a Kansas state song on June 30, 1947, and is generally regarded as an unofficial song from West America.

The most popular version of this song is a version recorded by Bing Crosby on September 27, 1933, with Lennie Hayton and his orchestra for Brunswick Records appearing on charts of the day. This turns a little saddle song into the most famous western singing. The origins of "Home on the Range" are unclear and much debated at the time. It was published in 1910 in Cowboy Song and Other Border Ballad by John Lomax, who said he learned it from a black rescuer in Texas. In 1925 the arrangement of sheet music found some popularity, and in 1927 Vernon Dalhart recorded it for Brunswick Records. The California radio cowboys took it from him, and in 1930, the first Western star in Hollywood, Ken Maynard, recorded the song. However, it was not until Crosby's version that the song was seen as a national anthem for the west. Its popularity led to a plagiarism lawsuit that created a search for its background.

Crosby's appearance is illustrated by author Gary Giddins as a transformation of "nostalgic lamentation into an ode for pioneering, shared historical dreams, affirmation of vague fierceness of religion in the face of danger". Giddins praised the smooth Crosby decor, which enhanced melodies.

Modern usage

Bing Crosby recorded the song again in 1938 and 1939. Frank Sinatra also recorded the song on March 10, 1946; His version was released in the United Kingdom and not available in the United States until 1993. Other people who have recorded the song include Connie Francis, Gene Autry, Burl Ives, Pete Seeger, Johnnie Ray, Slim Whitman, Steve Lawrence and Tori Amos. "Home on the Range" is often done in American patriotic music programs and concerts and is often used in dramas and movies. The song also features a musical theme for the early Western Movie starring Ray "Crash" Corrigan and two of his co-stars under their film role as "The Three Mesqueteers". It is also featured in the 1937 comedy of The Awful Truth screwball (sung by Irene Dunne and Ralph Bellamy), the 1948 film . Blandings Building Their Dream House (sung by Cary Grant and Myrna Loy), off-Broadway musicals in 1967 You're a Good Guy, Charlie Brown (sung by players as glee of club training numbers) the 1980 film Where Buffalo Roam (sung by Neil Young during the credit opening), the 2009 film The Messenger (sung by Willie Nelson at the closing of the credit), and the 1946 western film > Colorado Serenade (sung by actor Roscoe Ates).

The song naturally also goes to the shorts for children and adults, as in the 1954 Looney Tunes cartoon Claws for Alarm , where it was sung by Porky Pig. Similarly, Bugs Bunny sang in both The Fair-Haired Hare (1951) and Oily Hare (1952), the last of which contains the original lyrics specifically for Texas's oilman.

In the 2010 Fallout video game Fallout: New Vegas , a version of this song titled "Home on the Wastes" appeared, with lyrics that refers to good radiation free dwellings. In the altered lyrics, the original animals mentioned in the old version, such as buffalo, deer, antelopes, and prairie dogs, were replaced with bighorners, mole rats, fire geckos, and radscorpions.

The song is also used in the Wizards of Waverly Place, sung by Maxine characters in the episode "Back to max", The Wild Kratts episode "Prairie Who" parodies Song as "Home On The Prairie" sung by Chris, Martin, Aviva, And Jimmy.
