Amazon Video is an Internet on demand Internet service developed, owned and operated by Amazon.com. Offering television and movie shows for rent or purchase and Prime Video , the original content selection of Amazon Studio and licensed acquisitions are included in the Amazon Prime subscription. In the United States, access to Prime Video is also available through a video-only membership, which does not require a full Prime subscription. In countries such as France and Italy, Rent or Buy and Prime Video are not available on the Amazon site and the Initial Video content is accessible only through dedicated websites. In countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, Amazon Video also offers the Amazon Channel , which allows viewers to subscribe to the content of other suppliers, including HBO in the United States.

Launched on September 7, 2006 as Amazon Unbox in the United States, the service grew with its growing library, and added Prime Video membership to Prime development. It was later renamed Amazon Instant Video on Demand. After acquiring the local streaming service and DVD-by-mail LoveFilm in 2011, Prime Video was added to Prime in the UK, Germany and Austria in 2014, a move that infuriated some members of the Prime UK because the bundling was not negotiable with a 61% increase subscription fee.

In the UK, Germany and Austria, Prime Video is available with a monthly subscription of Ã, Â £ 5.99 or EUR7, 99 per month, resuming the LoveFilm Instant plan. This service was previously available in Norway, Denmark and Sweden in 2012, but was discontinued in 2013. On April 18, 2016, Amazon split Prime Video from Amazon Prime in the US for $ 8.99 per month. This service also hosts the Original Amazon content along with the title in Video as well.

On December 14, 2016, Amazon Video was launched worldwide (except Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria) extending its reach beyond the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Japan. Among the new territories, this service is included with Prime in Belgium, Canada, France, India, Italy and Spain, with Poland to be included in 2018, while for all other countries provided with monthly promotional price of $/EUR2.99 per month for the first six months and $/EUR5.99 per month thereafter.

As of August 2014, the service is no longer available for downloading purchased instant videos. On February 22, 2011, the service was renamed Amazon Instant Video and added access to 5,000 movies and TV shows for Amazon Prime members. On September 4, 2012, Amazon signed an agreement with paid TV channel, Epix, to showcase the movies on their streaming service, in a move to compete with their Netflix competitors. Additionally, in November 2013, Amazon aired the comedy Alpha House and Betas , which is an original series exclusively available online through Prime Instant Video services. Amazon offers the first three episodes of both series at once for free, with each subsequent episode being released weekly thereafter for members of Prime.

In February 2014, Amazon announced that its streaming service from its UK subsidiary LoveFilm will be folded into Instant Video services on February 26, 2014. In January 2015, Transparent became the first event produced by Amazon Studio for won a major award and first series of streaming video services to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.

In 2015, Amazon launches its Streaming Partner Program (now known as Amazon Channels), a platform that allows third-party subscription-based channels and streaming services to offer Amazon Prime customers through the Amazon Video platform. This service is separate from the Amazon Video offerings, and must be purchased separately. The original launch in the US includes services like Curiosity Stream, Lifetime Movie Club, Shudder AMC, Showtime, Starz, and more. The service then adds other partners, such as HBO and Cinemax, Fandor, PBS Kids, Seeso, Toku, and Boomerang.

On July 30, 2015, Amazon announced that it had hired Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to produce an automotive exhibit without title for Amazon Prime Video which would later be named The Grand Tour . Both Jeff Bezos and Amazon.com have stated how much Clarkson, Hammond, or May get paid to produce the program through their production company W. Chump & Children, but Jeff Bezos stated that the deal was "very expensive, but worth it". The budget for the show has not been officially announced, but Andy Wilman, former executive producer of Top Gear states that each episode will have a budget of about Ã, Â £ 4.5 million, nine times larger than Top Gear's budget. Also in July, Amazon announced plans to expand services to India.

In September 2015, the word "Instant" was crossed out of its title in the US, and its name was changed to Amazon Video only. In November 2016, Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon pursued streaming rights to a professional US sports league to further differentiate the service.

Amazon announced in November 2016 that it plans to stream The Grand Tour globally, leading to speculation as to whether the full Amazon Video service will launch a wider international launch to compete with Netflix. On December 14, 2016, Amazon Video expanded to 200 additional countries.

In January 2017, Amazon announced Anime Strike, an anime-focused Amazon Channels service. In May 2017, Amazon Channels expanded to Germany and the United Kingdom; in the UK, the company reached an agreement to offer channels from Discovery Communications (including Eurosport), and on-demand/on-demand content from ITV.

In April 2017, Amazon began to make sports-related content acquisitions, first gaining a non-exclusive right to stream part of the NFL Thursday Night Football game during the 2017 NFL season to Prime customers on a $ 50 million deal, earlier with Twitter. In August, Amazon gained British television rights to ATP World Tour starting in 2019, replacing Sky Sports. The deal will run until 2023 and will exclusively feature all 1000 event masters and 12 500 and 250 series tournaments. Amazon will become a third party pay TV provider for the ATP finals and starting in 2018 for the Queens Club and Eastbourne tournaments. ATP announced a two-year deal in September for Amazon to stream the Next Generation ATP Final. In November it was announced that Amazon had acquired British television rights to the US Open for five years from the 2018 edition, to report Ã, Â £ 30 million. Eurosport, which has the right to Europe, extends their agreement with the US Open but excludes Britain, which is ironic because the Amazon has reached an agreement with the broadcaster to stream their channel at their station. ATP also announced that Amazon in the US will screen tennis channels, Tennis TV from 2018.

On January 5, 2018, Amazon announced that it would end their Anime Strike and Heera services, combining their content with Prime Video.

In June 2018, it was announced that Amazon has earned the right to broadcast 20 Premier League football matches straight from the 2019-20 season with a three-year contract. The deal marks a major change in the way English football fans will watch the Premier League, as this will be the first time that the league will be featured on domestic live streaming services, as shown for Premier League matches that are shown exclusively on television.

Amazon Video, through its sister company Amazon Studios, has global television adaptation rights for The Lord of the Rings.
