Albert Leornes Greene (born April 13, 1946), often known as The Reverend Al Green , is an African American singer, songwriter and record producer, famous for recording soul soul series hit in the early 1970s, including "Take Me to the River", "Tired of Being Alone", "I Still Love You", "Love and Happiness", and his distinctive song, "Let's Stay Together." Inaugurated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, Green was referred to on the museum site as "one of the most gifted soul music suppliers". He has also been referred to as "The Last of the Great Soul Singers". Green is included in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, ranked No. 1. 65.

Albert Leornes Greene was born on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas. Sixth of ten children born to Cora Lee and Robert G. Greene, Jr., a multiplier farmer, Al began performing with his brothers in a group called Greene Brothers at about the age of ten. In high school, Al formed a vocal group called Al Greene & amp; Creation. Two members of the group, Curtis Rodgers and Palmer James, formed an independent label called Hot Line Music Journal. In 1968, after changing their name to Al Greene & amp; Soul Mates, they recorded the song "Back Up Train", releasing it on Hot Line Music. The song was a hit on the R & amp; B. However, subsequent follow-up groups failed to chart, as did their debut album Back Up Train . Careers

Initial success

After noting that Green has tried to sing like Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, and James Brown, Mitchell became his vocal mentor, training him to find his own voice. Before releasing her first album with Hi, Green erased the last "e" from her name. Subsequently, he released Green Is Blues (1969), which was a moderate success. The follow-up album, Al Green Gets Next to You (1971), featured cover of R & amp; B cover Temptations â € Å"I Can not Get Next to Youâ €, recorded in a slow-oriented blues version. Two years later, he recorded the theme song to a short show called Good Sports. In 1993, he signed a contract with RCA and with Baker again as a producer, releasing the album, Do not Look Back . Green received the ninth Grammy award for his collaboration with Lyle Lovett for their duet of "Funny How Time Slips Away". Green's album 1995, Your Heart's In Good Hands , was released around the time when Green was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only song released from the album, "Keep On Pushing Love", is described as "begging for his classic early sound and classic [Green's]."

In 2000, Green released his autobiography, Take Me to the River . Two years later, he won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and recorded a hit R & amp; B duet with Ann Nesby on the song, "Put It On Paper". Green reunited with Willie Mitchell in 2003 for his album, I Can not Stop . A year later, Green re-recorded the previous song, "Simply Beautiful", with Queen Latifah on the last album, The Dana Owens Album . In 2005, Green and Mitchell collaborated in Everything is fine . The 2008 album, Lay It Down , was produced by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and James Poyser. It became his first album to reach the top ten since the early 1970s. Personal life

On October 18, 1974, shortly after Al Green Explores Your Mind was released, Mary Woodson White, Green's girlfriend, attacked her before committing suicide at her home in Memphis. Even though she is married, White is reported to be angry when Green refuses to marry her. At some point in the evening, White watered Green with a pot of grits while he was taking a bath, causing severe burns in his back, abdomen, and Green's arms. He then discovered,.38 and committed suicide. In his wallet, the police found a note stating his intentions and the reason. (In his biography of Al Green, Jimmy McDonough dedicates the entire chapter to Mary Woodson White's death.)

Green mentioned the incident with White as a wake-up call to change his life. He became an ordained minister from the Full Bible Tabernacle in Memphis in 1976. Continue to record R & B, Green saw his sales begin to slip and attract mixed reviews from critics. In 1979, Green injured himself falling from the stage while performing in Cincinnati and interpreting this as a message from God. In June 1977, Green married Shirley Kyles. They have three daughters, Alva, Rubi, and Kora. Shirley filed for divorce in 1978 and 1981. In a recent divorce complaint, Shirley alleged that Green had made her a victim of domestic violence during their marriage. Green initially denied the allegations, but under oath in 1982, he admitted to torturing couples when provoked. Their divorce was completed in February 1983. The story of Nicole Brown Simpson inspired Shirley in 1995 to announce the persecution she suffered to help other victims.

Green has six children; two sons, Al Green Jr (with singer Margaret Foxworth), and Trevor; four daughters, Alva, Rubi, Kora (with Shirley Kyles), and Kala.

Green is a member of Prince Hall Mason, the wing of African-American Freemasonry, at Level Thirty-Three.

Green lives and preaches in Memphis, Tennessee near Graceland.

Green Maxine's sister disappeared in September 2013 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Awards and honors

Green was appointed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2004, he was named the Gospel Music Hall of Fame of the Gospel Music Association. In the same year, he was appointed The Songwriters Hall of Fame. Also in 2004, the Rolling Stone magazine placed it at No. No. 65 on the list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at BET Awards 2009 on June 24, 2009.

On August 26, 2004, Green was awarded as a BMI Icon at the annual BMI Annual Awards. He joins the previous list of icons Icon including the legend R & amp; B James Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Bo Diddley.
