Web traffic is the amount of data that visitors send and receive to the website. This certainly does not include the traffic generated by the bot. Since the mid-1990s, web traffic has become a big part of Internet traffic. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. The site monitors incoming and outbound traffic to see which sections or pages of their sites are popular and if there are any visible trends, such as a single page viewed mostly by people in a particular country. There are many ways to monitor this traffic and the data collected is used to help structure the site, highlighting security issues or pointing to potential bandwidth shortfalls.
Not all web traffic is accepted. Some companies offer ad schemes that, in return for increased web traffic (visitors), pay for screen space on the site. There is also "fake traffic", ie bot traffic generated by a third party. This type of traffic can damage the reputation of the website, its visibility in Google, and the authority of the domain as a whole.
Sites are also often aimed at increasing their web traffic through inclusion in search engines and through search engine optimization.

Web Analytics is a measure of visitor behavior to a website. In a commercial context, it primarily refers to the measurement of which aspects of the website work towards the business goals of Internet marketing initiatives; for example, which landing page encourages people to make a purchase. Leading software vendors and web analytics services include Google Analytics, IBM Digital Analytics (formerly Coremetrics) and Adobe Omniture.

Web traffic is measured to see the popularity of websites and individual pages or sections within a site. This can be done by looking at the traffic statistics found in the web server log file, listing all the pages presented automatically. A hit is generated when any file is served. The page itself is considered a file, but the image is also a file, so a page with 5 images can generate 6 clicks (5 pictures and the page itself). The page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within the website - the visitor will always generate at least one page view (main page) but can generate even more. Tracking external applications to websites can record traffic by inserting a small piece of HTML code on every page of the website.
Web traffic is also sometimes measured by sniff packets and thus gets a random sample of traffic data that can be used to extrapolate information about overall web traffic across Internet usage.
The following types of information are often compiled when monitoring web traffic:
- Number of visitors.
- The average number of pageviews per visitor - high numbers will indicate that the average visitor goes deep into the site, probably because they like it or find it useful.
- Average visit duration - total duration of user visits. As a rule, the more time they spend the more they are attracted to your company and easier to contact.
- Average page duration - how long the page is viewed. The more pages viewed, the better for your company.
- Domain class - all levels of information The IP address required to send web pages and content.
- Busy time - the most popular watch time on the site will show when it's best to do a promotional campaign and when it's most ideal for maintenance
- Most requested pages - the most popular pages
- Most requested post pages - login page is the first page viewed by visitors and the event that is the page that most attracts visitors
- Most requested exit pages - the most requested outbound pages can help find bad pages, broken links, or exit pages that may have popular external links
- The top path - the path is the order of pages viewed by visitors from logging in, with the top path identifying how most customers go through the site
- Referrer; The host can track the source (clear) links and determine which sites generate the most traffic for a given page.
Websites generate traffic and statistics rankings based on the people who access the site while using toolbars and other online measurement methods. The difficulty with this is that it does not see the full traffic picture for a site. Big sites usually hire company services like NetRatings Nielsen or Quantcast, but their reports are only available by subscription.
Control
The amount of traffic viewed by a website is a measure of its popularity. By analyzing visitor statistics it is possible to see the shortcomings of the site and look to improve the area. It is also possible to increase the popularity of the site and the number of people who visit it.
Restrict access
Sometimes it's important to protect certain parts of the site with a password, allowing only authorized people to visit certain sections or pages.
Some site administrators have chosen to block their pages to certain traffic, such as by geographic location. The re-election campaign site for US President George W. Bush (GeorgeWBush.com) was blocked for all non-US Internet users on October 25, 2004 after the attacks reported on the site.
It is also possible to limit access to the web server both based on the number of connections and by the bandwidth issued by each connection. On the Apache HTTP server, this is done by the limitipconn and other modules.
From search engine
The majority of website traffic is driven by search engines. Millions of people use search engines every day to research topics, buy products, and perform their daily surfing activities. Search engines use keywords to help users find relevant information, and each of the major search engines has developed a unique algorithm to determine where a website is placed in search results. When a user clicks on one of the lists in the search results, they are directed to the corresponding website and the data is transferred from the website server, thus counting visitors to the entire traffic flow to that website.
Search engine optimization (SEO), is an ongoing practice of optimizing websites to help improve its ranking in search engines. Several internal and external factors are involved that can help improve the list of sites in the search engines. The higher a site ranks in a search engine for a particular keyword, the more traffic they will receive.
Increase traffic
Web traffic can be improved by site placement in search engines and ad purchases, including bulk email, pop-up ads, and in-page ads.
Web traffic can also be upgraded by buying through a web traffic provider who is expert in delivering targeted traffic; however, buying traffic in the past has seen many websites penalized on search engines.
Web traffic can be improved not only by attracting more visitors to the site, but also by encouraging each visitor to "linger" on the site, seeing many pages in the visit. ( see Outbrain for an example of this exercise )
If a web page is not listed on the first page of any search, the chances of someone finding it greatly reduced (especially if there is another competition on the first page). Very few people go through the first page, and the percentage that goes into the next page is much lower. As a result, getting the right placement in search engines, a practice known as SEO, is just as important as the website itself..
Traffic excess
Too much web traffic can slow or prevent all access to websites dramatically. This is caused by more requests for files that go to the server than can be handled and may be deliberate attack on the site or simply due to the popularity overload. Large-scale websites with multiple servers can often cope with the necessary traffic, and most likely smaller services are affected by traffic overload. A sudden traffic load can also hang your server or may cause shutdown of your service.
Service denial attack
Denial-of-service attacks (DoS attacks) have forced the website to close after a malicious attack, flooding the site with more requests than can be overcome. Viruses have also been used to coordinate large-scale denial-of-service attacks.
Unexpected popularity
Sudden spike in publications can inadvertently lead to excess web traffic. News items in the media, fast-spreading emails, or links from popular sites can lead to an increase in visitors (sometimes called flash crowds or Slashdot effects).
Overall all over the world
According to Mozilla since January 2017, more than half of Web traffic is encrypted with HTTPS.
According to estimates cited by Interactive Advertising Bureau in 2014 about one-third of Web traffic is generated by Internet bots and malware.
