schedules , often called rota or list names , are employee lists, and related information, e.g. location, working time, responsibility for a specified time, e.g. week, month or season of sport.
Schedule required for day-to-day operations of many businesses, e.g. retail stores, manufacturing facilities and several offices. The schedule-making process is called scheduling . Effective work schedules balance stakeholder needs such as management, employees, and customers.
The daily schedule is usually ordered in chronological order, which means the first employee working that day is listed at the top, followed by the next coming employee, etc. weekly or monthly schedules are usually ordered alphabetically, employees listed on the left side of the grid, with the days of the week at the top of the grid. In shift jobs, schedules usually use a repeating shift plan.
Schedule most often created by managers. In larger operations, a human resources manager or scheduling specialist may be solely dedicated to creating and maintaining a schedule. Schedules by this definition are sometimes referred to as workflows.
Software is often used to allow organizations to better manage staff scheduling. Organizations typically use spreadsheet software or employee scheduling software to create and manage employee shifts, tasks and preferences. Advanced employee scheduling software also provides a way to connect with staff, ask for their preferences and communicate schedules to them.

On On shift shift or On-call scheduling is a practice that requires employees to be available to be called to the last minute without pre-scheduling. In the United States, such practices are opposed by rights groups as "unfair and harmful to employees."
