Biography

Early life and career

Zawinul was born and raised in LandstraÃÆ'Ÿe, Vienna. Classically trained in the Wien Conservatory, Zawinul played in various broadcasting groups and studios before emigrating to the United States in 1959 with a music scholarship at Berklee School of Music in Boston.

He went on to play with Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, where he first met Wayne Shorter after having had an influence in hiring him. Short left soon afterwards to play in the group Art Blakey and Zawinul seemed to be dismissed from Ferguson's band for wanting to control too much personnel decisions. Zawinul then toured and recorded with singer Dinah Washington from 1959 to 1961.

In 1991, Zawinul was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music.

With Adderley Cannonball

In 1961, Zawinul joined Quintet led by the Cannonball Adderley saxophonist. During his nine years in charge of Adderley, he wrote hit songs "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". He also wrote "Walk Tall" and "Country Preacher", the latter a tribute to American Civil Rights Movement leader Jesse Jackson, from 1969's Country Preacher album.

With Miles Davis

In the late 1960s, Zawinul recorded with Miles Davis's studio band and helped create jazz fusion. He played on the album In a Silent Way , the title song he had written, and the album's album Bitches Brew , where he donated a twenty-minute "Pharaoh's Dance" whole one side. Zawinul is known to have played directly with Davis only once, on July 10, 1991, in Paris, with Wayne Shorter, shortly before Davis died.

Zawinul, along with Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, was one of the first in jazz to use an early electric piano and synthesizer like the ARP 2600 in 1973 Sweetnighter . He was also among the first to use electric piano, Wurlitzer. He uses Fender-Rhodes afterwards, adds the wah-wah pedal and then the Mutron effect unit to a complex gradual timbre. His creativity and attention to detail produces a very modern sound. She also plays kalimba on Mysterious Traveler Weather Reports and Mr. Missing .

With Weather Report

In 1970, Zawinul co-founded Weather Report with a saxophonist and Davis alumnus, Wayne Shorter. Their first two years emphasized a relatively open group form of improvisation, not unlike what Miles Davis did in a more rock-oriented format. However, Zawinul started making changes with their third album, Sweetnighter, stating that he 'has been waiting for something to happen'.

Funk elements such as electric bass, wah-wah pedal, etc. began to be introduced with the sound of the band. With their 4th album, Mysterious Traveler, its musical forms are now through a composition similar to classical music, and the combination of jazz harmony with the 1970s drain elements helped launch the band into the most commercially successful period.

The band's biggest commercial success came from its compositions "Birdland", a 6-minute piece featured on 1977's Weather Report album Heavy Weather, which reached number 30 on Billboard's pop album chart. "Birdland" is one of the best known jazz pieces of the 1970s, which is covered by many famous artists from The Manhattan Transfer and Quincy Jones to Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich Big Band and Jefferson Starship. This song won him three Grammys.

The Weather Report was active until the mid-1980s, with Zawinul and Shorter remaining the only permanent members through several shift personnel. Shorter and Zawinul then split up, after their "final" footage of Sportin 'Life , when it was discovered that they had to perform one more album to fulfill their contract with a CBS record. This Is This! therefore became the band's last album.

With Absolute Ensemble

Absolute Zawinul, the CD recording by Absolute Ensemble, with music by Zawinul, was the last studio recording made during the year in which Zawinul died in 2007, and performed some of his original music and orchestration by Absolute Member Ensemble, Gene Pritsker , which he created in collaboration with Zawinul.

Later career

Zawinul also wrote a symphony, titled The Danube Stories , commissioned by Brucknerhaus, Linz. It was first performed as part of Linzer Klangwolke (a large open-air broadcasting event), for the opening of the 1993 Brückner Festival in Linz. In its seven movements, the symphony traces the Danube from Donaueschingen through various countries ending in the Black Sea. It was recorded in 1995 by Czech State Philharmonic Orchestra, Brno, by Caspar Richter.

Death

Zawinul fell ill and was hospitalized at his native Vienna on August 7, 2007, after ending a five-week European tour. She died a little over a month later from a rare form of skin cancer (Merkel cell carcinoma) on September 11, 2007. She is buried at the Zentralfriedhof Cemetery in Vienna.
