Google Maps is a mobile mapping app developed by Google for Android and iOS mobile operating systems; this uses Google Maps for information.

The first Android app was released in September 2008, although GPS-localization features have been tested on phones since 2007. Google Maps is Apple's solution for its iOS mapping service until iOS 6 release in September 2012, at that time being replaced by Apple Maps, with Google releases its own standalone Google Maps app on the iOS platform next December.

The Google Maps app on Android and iOS has many of the same features, including turn-by-turn navigation, street view, and public transport information. Updates in June 2012 and May 2014 allow the functionality to allow users to save certain map areas for offline access, while updates in 2017 have included features to actively help US users find available parking spaces in cities, and provide Indian users with mode of transportation two wheels to increase traffic accessibility.

Google Maps on iOS received significant acclaim after the launch of a stand-alone app in December 2012, with critics highlighting detailed information and design as a positive thing. However, the app has received criticism regarding privacy issues, especially location history tracking pages that offer "step-by-step" location recordings, with privacy advocates advising users to disable the feature, and that the April 2014 privacy policy change allows Google to have an integrated login on her entire iOS app, helping her identify every user interaction in each app.

Histori

On November 28, 2007, Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 was released. It displays a beta version of the "My Location" feature, which uses GPS/Assisted GPS location from a mobile device, if available, equipped by specifying the wireless network and the nearest cell site. The software searches for the location of a cell site using a known network database and wireless site. By triangulating the different signal strengths of the cell transmitter and then using its location property (retrieved from the database), My Location specifies the current user location.

On September 23, 2008, to coincide with the announcement of the first commercial Android device, Google announced that the Google Maps app had been released for its Android operating system.

Until iOS 6, the built-in map app on the iOS operating system is supported by Google Maps. However, with the iOS 6 announcement in June 2012, Apple announced that it has created their own Map Map mapping service, which officially replaces Google Maps when iOS 6 was released on September 19, 2012. However, at launch, Apple Maps received significant criticism from users due to inaccuracies, errors, and bugs. One day later, The Guardian reported that Google is preparing its own Google Maps app, released on December 12, 2012. In just two days, the app has been downloaded more than ten million times, and data from the company MoPub mobile advertising exchange revealed that iOS 6 adoption grew 29% after the launch of the Google Maps app. However, data from different advertising and analytical companies, Chitika, suggest that the increase in adoption is actually due to the release of iPhone 5 in China, new phones coming with iOS 6 already installed earlier.

Features

The Google Maps app for iOS and Android has many of the same features, including turn-by-turn navigation, street views, and public transport information. Turn-by-turn navigation was originally announced by Google as a separate beta testing app that was exclusive for Android 2.0 devices in October 2009. The standalone original iOS version does not support iPad, but tablet support was added with version 2.0 in July 2013. An update on June 2012 for Android devices added support for offline access to maps downloaded from certain regions, features finally released for iOS devices, and made stronger on Android, in May 2014. In January 2017, Google added a special feature for Android that will, in some US cities, indicate the difficulty level in finding available parking spaces, and on Android and iOS, apps can, start update April 2017, considering where users parked. In August 2017, Google Maps for Android is updated with new functionality to actively assist users in finding parking spaces and garages that are close to destinations. In December 2017, Google added a new two-wheel mode to its Android app, designed for users in India, allowing more accessibility in traffic conditions.

Reception

USA Today welcomed the app back to iOS, saying: "A reappearance in the middle of the night from the Google Maps app for iPhone like the return of an old friend.Only your friend, who 'disappeared for three months, looks back better from before. "Jason Parker of CNET called it the" map king ", said," With its iOS Maps app, Google sets the standard for what mobile navigation and more. " Bree Fowler from Associated Press compares Google and Apple map apps, saying: "One obvious advantage Apple has is the style. As Apple devices, the maps are clean and clear and have fun and beautiful elements, especially in 3-D. But when it comes to depth and information, Google is still in power and no doubt will be welcomed back by his fans. " Gizmodo rated it 4.5 stars, stating:" Maps Done Right ". According to The New York Times , Google "acknowledges that it's [the iOS app] better than Google Maps for Android phones, which has accomodated the growing feature set especially with stacking on the menu".

However, Google Maps location tracking is widely perceived as a threat to user privacy, with Dylan Tweney from VentureBeat writing in August 2014 that "Google may record your location, step by step, via Google Maps," and users linked to Google's location history map, which "lets you see the path you've been tracking for a particular day that your smartphone is running Google Maps." Tweney then gives instructions on how to turn off location history. History tracking is also noticed, and is recommended disabled, by the editor at CNET and TechCrunch . In addition, Quartz reported in April 2014 that "cunning new privacy changes" will affect most iOS users. Privacy changes, updates for the Gmail iOS app that "now supports signing in across iOS Google apps, including Maps, Drive, YouTube and Chrome", mean Google will be able to identify user actions in its various apps.
