Unity is a cross platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, primarily used to develop three-dimensional and two-dimensional video games and simulations for computers, consoles and mobile devices. First announced for OS X at the Worldwide Developer Conference of Apple in 2005, it has since been extended to target 27 platforms. Six major versions of Unity have been released.

Ikhtisar

Unity is a multipurpose gaming machine that supports 2D and 3D graphics, drag-and-drop functionality and scripting using C #. Two other programming languages are supported: Boo, which has been left with the release of Unity 5 and JavaScript which started the depreciation process in August 2017 after the release of Unity 2017.1.

The machine targets the following graph APIs: Direct3D on Windows and Xbox One; OpenGL on Linux, macOS, and Windows; OpenGL ES on Android and iOS; WebGL on the web; and ownership API in the video game console. In addition, Unity supports low level Metallic APIs on iOS and MacOS and Vulkan on Android, Linux, and Windows, as well as Direct3D 12 on Windows and Xbox One.

In the 2D game, Unity enables the import of sprite and sophisticated 2D world renderers. For 3D games, Unity allows texture compression, mipmaps, and resolution specifications for each platform supported by the game, and provides support for mapping, reflection mapping, parallax mapping, ambient occlusion screen space (SSAO), dynamic shadows using map shadows, rendering-to-texture and full-screen post-effect processing. Unity also offers services to developers, these are: Unity Ads, Unity Analytics, Unity Certification, Unity Cloud Build, Unity Everyplay, Unity IAP, Unity Multiplayer, Unity Performance Reporting, and Unity Collaborate.

Unity supports the creation of custom vertices, fragments (or pixels), tesselation, compute shaders and Unity own surface shading using Cg, a modified version of Microsoft's High-Level Shading Language.

Unity supports the development of 27 different platforms. The platforms are listed as follows: iOS, Android, Tizen, Windows, Windows Universal Platform, Mac, Linux, WebGL, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, Steam VR, PlayStation VR, Gear VR, Windows Mixed Reality, Daydream, Android TV, Samsung Smart TV, tvOS, Nintendo Switch, OS Fire, Facebook Gameroom, Apple ARKit, Google ARCore, and Vuforia.

Unity previously supported seven other platforms including Unity Web Player itself. Unity Web Player is a browser plugin supported only on Windows and OS X, which is no longer in use for WebGL support.

Unity is a standard software development kit (SDK) for the Nintendo Wii U video game console platform, with a free copy included by Nintendo with any Wii U developer license. Unity Technologies calls this third-party bundling SDK a "first industry".

History

In 2012, VentureBeat said, "Some companies have contributed a lot to the flow of independently produced games as Unity Technologies.... More than 1.3 million developers use their tools to graph gee-graphics on iOS, Android, console, PC , and web-based games.... Unity wants to be a machine for multi-platform games, period. "

For the Apple Design Award at the WWDC 2006 trade show, Apple, Inc. named Unity as runner-up for Best Usage of Graphics category of Mac OS X, a year after Unity was launched at the same trade show. Unity Technologies says this is the first time a game design tool has ever been nominated for this award. The May 2012 Survey by the Game Game magazine indicates Unity as the top gaming machine for mobile platforms. In July 2014, Unity won the "Best Engine" award at the annual Excellence Industry Development Award in the UK.

Unity 5 was greeted with the same praise, with The Verge stating that "Unity begins with the goal of making game development universally accessible.... Unity 5 is a long-awaited move for the future. "

Following the release of Unity 5, Unity Technologies drew some criticisms for the high volume of rapidly produced games that were published on the Steam distribution platform by inexperienced developers. CEO John Riccitiello said in an interview that he believes this as a side effect of Unity's success in democratizing game development: "If I had my way I would like to see 50 million people using Unity - though I do not think we'll get there anytime soon I would like to see high school and college kids using it, people outside the core industry.I think it's sad that most people are technology consumers and not creators. This world is better put when people know how to make, not just consume , and that's what we're trying to promote. "

In December 2016, Unity Technologies announced that it would change the version numbering system for Unity from sequence-based identifiers to the release year to customize versions with more frequent release frequencies.

On December 16, 2013, Unity Technologies Japan revealed a new screenshot for an official mascot character named Unity-chan ( ??????? , Yuniti-chan ) , real name Kohaku? tori ( ???? , ? tori Kohaku ) (voiced by Asuka Kakumoto ), with a character exhibition at the Comic Market 85 event at Tokyo Big Sight between December 29 and 31, where the themed items will be distributed and the voice actress will be present at the event. Game data related to the character will be released in spring 2014. The character is designed by Japanese Unity Technologies designer "ntny" as an open-source hero character. The Company allows the use of Unity-chan and related characters in a secondary project under a specific license. For example, Unity-chan appears as a playable character in Runbow . The character's popularity also led to his appearance in VOCALOID adaptations, including his own voice library for VOCALOID4 and VOCALOID-specific adaptations designed to work with Unity Engine 5.0 versions called Unity with VOCALOID.
