NBA Live is a series of basketball video games published by EA Sports. This series, which has been released annually from 1994 to 2009 and 2013 to the present, is the successor of the previous E-Play series NBA Playoffs and NBA Showdown . Live mainly competes with the NBA 2K series and formerly NBA ShootOut.

The predecessor of the NBA Live series is the NBA Playoffs series, featuring Lakers vs. Celtics, was first released in 1989 for PC compatible with MS-DOS and later adapted for console in early 1990 for Sega Mega Drive. This game is played from a horizontal view (while the newer version switches to an isometric view before finally switching to 3D on the newer consoles). This game is one of the first to feature an NBA license, which contains both a real NBA team and player resemblance and signature movement. Details like Horace Grant's spectacles are clearly visible, and Michael Jordan's "Water Reverse Layup" is animated with extremely high accuracy. Player numbers are also visible. The game featured only eight of the sixteen teams qualified for the NBA playoff that year, as well as both NBA All-Star teams.
The next game in the series is Bulls vs. Lakers , released in 1991, followed by Bulls vs. Blazers in 1992. In autumn 1994, the annual EA basketball release received a simpler title than NBA Live 95 . This naming pattern uses the years to come, except for the various uses of all 4 digit years from 2000 to 2005 . Every early release of the version was in the fall near the start of the NBA campaign, although additional ports were sometimes delayed until the end of January or February. After 16 consecutive release seasons, the attempt to retool the game as NBA Elite 11 met with developmental issues, and put the game on hiatus for three years. Starting from NBA Live 2000 , this series features the NBA Live Legend All-Stars Team, which includes some of the biggest names of the five decades (50 to 90s). These teams can be used instantly, but to use players as regular players (eg traded, played on regular NBA Teams) they have to be unlocked. Through the series, several lists of Legend names were changed for various reasons. Michael Jordan was in the 90s team through 2004 before being removed due to licensing in the next version. Spud Webb, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Tom Chambers added to the list of names in NBA Live 06 .
NBA Live 2005 brought the addition of Freestyle Air, the NBA All-Star Weekend that includes the Rookie Challenge, the Three Point Shootout, the Slam Dunk Contest, and the NBA All-Star Game, and the Freestyle Challenge that 2 or more players can play Three Point Shootout or Slam Dunk Contest.
In NBA Live 08 a number of international teams are added under the FIBA ​​license.

After the release of NBA Live 10 , EA is trying to retool the series with a new name with NBA Elite 11 . However, this game encountered poor publicity and development issues before it was released and canceled (though a playable demo was released for download, and several copies of the full release found their way to customers). In November 2010, the franchise development was moved from an EA Canada studio to a Florida-based Tiburon studio. It was finally announced that the next installment series will be released in Fall 2012 and will return to the name of NBA Live as NBA Live 13 but it will be announced on September 27, 2012, that they will cancel the release. Not until autumn 2013, the next game, NBA Live 14 , will be released. NBA Live 16 was released on September 29, 2015. NBA Live Mobile was released on July 6, 2016 and will now be refreshing for the first time. NBA Live 18 was released on September 15, 2017 and features players from WNBA.
