Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools ) is a web service free of charge by Google for webmasters. This allows webmasters to check their indexing status and optimize their website visibility.

Starting May 20, 2015, Google changed the Google Webmaster Tools brand as Google Search Console . In January 2018, Google introduced a new version of Search Console, with an updated user interface and upgrade.

Features

It has a tool that enables webmasters:

  • Send and check the sitemap and also help the webmaster to check if there is an error with their sitemap.
  • Check and set the rate for crawling, and see statistics on when Googlebot accesses certain sites.
  • Write and check your robots.txt file to help discover blocked pages in robots.txt by mistake.

  • Get a list of the links that Googlebot has trouble crawling, including the errors that Googlebot receives when accessing the URLs in question.
  • See what keyword searches on Google point to sites listed in the SERPs, and click through the rate list. (Previously called 'Search Question'; brand renamed May 20, 2015 to 'Search Analytics' with possible extended filters for devices, search types and date periods).
  • Set preferred domains (e.g. prefer example.com rather than www.example.com or vice versa), which determines how the site URL is displayed in the SERPs.
  • Highlights to a structured Google Search element used to enrich search search entries (released in December 2012 as a Google Data Highlighter).

    • The Search Analytics report provides a more accurate report than the Search Queries report.
    • The report has been updated and provides up-to-date information possible.
  • Number of individual pages
    • Search The analytics report considers all links to the same page as a single impression.
    • Separate reports are available to track device type and search type.

Criticism and controversy

The list of incoming links on Google Webmaster Tools is generally much larger than the list of found incoming links using the link: example.com search query on Google itself. Google is silent about the difference. The list in Google Webmaster Tools includes a nofollow link that does not convey search engine optimization authority to the linked site. On the other hand, the list of links generated with the link: example.com type of request is considered by Google as a "significant" link in controversial terms. Google Webmaster Tools, as well as Google's index, seem to routinely ignore link spam. After a manual penalty is removed, Google Webmaster Tools will still display penalties for the next 1-3 days. After the Google Search Console name change, the resulting information indicates that Google Search Console is creating data points that do not match Google Analytics or ranking data, especially in the local search market.
