YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red ) is a paid streaming subscription service for YouTube in the United States, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and South Korea. It provides ad-free streaming of all YouTube-hosted videos, exclusive original content produced in collaboration with the main creators of the site, as well as offline playback and video background playback on mobile devices.

The service was originally launched in November 2014 as the Music Key , offering only music streams and music videos without ads from participating labels on YouTube and Google Play Music. The service was later revised and relaunched as YouTube Red on October 31, 2015, extending its scope to offer ad-free access to all YouTube videos, not just music. YouTube announced the rebranding of the service as YouTube Premium on May 17, 2018, along with the resumption of separate YouTube Music subscription services.

History

The service was first launched in November 2014 as Music Key, functioning as a collaboration between YouTube and Google Play Music, and is intended to successfully subscribe to its own services. Music Key offers free ad-play music videos from participating labels hosted on YouTube, as well as background music playback and offline music on mobile devices from within the YouTube app. This service also includes access to Google Play Music All Access, which provides ad-free audio streaming from the music library. Together with Music Key, Google also introduces a closer integration between Play Music and the YouTube app, including shared music recommendations, and access to YouTube music videos from within the Play Music app. Music Key is not YouTube's first breakthrough into premium content, having launched a movie rental in 2010, and a subscription-based premium channel in 2013.

During its invitation-only beta, Music Key faces mixed acceptance due to the limited scope of offerings; Chief Business Officer of YouTube, Robert Kyncl, explains that his daughter is confused as to why video songs from Frozen are not "music" within the scope of the service, and thus are not ad-free. These and other concerns lead to revamping the concept of Music Key to create YouTube Red; unlike Music Key, YouTube Red is designed to provide streaming free ads to all videos, not just music content. This shift requires YouTube to request permission from the creator and its rights holder to enable their content to be part of an ad-free service; under the terms of the new contract, the partner will receive a share of the total revenue from a YouTube Red subscription, as determined by how much of their content is viewed by the customer.

YouTube also seeks to compete with sites like Hulu and Netflix by offering original content as part of a subscription service, utilizing the leading YouTube personality in combination with professional producers. Robert Kyncl acknowledges that while many well-known YouTube personalities have built up their followers and created content while operating on a "frugal budget", he acknowledges that "to improve, it takes different types of business, different types of skills." Like storytelling and "showrunning". A leading YouTube personality PewDiePie, involved in one of the original documents planned for the service, explained that the service is intended to reduce lost losses due to the use of ad blocking.

YouTube Red is officially inaugurated on October 21, 2015. On May 18, 2016, YouTube Red and YouTube Music launched in Australia and New Zealand, the first country to gain access to services outside the United States.

On August 3, 2016, YouTube Red support was added to the YouTube Kids app.

On December 6, 2016, YouTube Red expanded to South Korea.

On May 17, 2018, YouTube announced the upcoming rebranding of services as YouTube Premium , in addition to the relaunch of YouTube Music with a separate music-only subscription service (which, as before, will be bundled with the YouTube service Premium is larger, and also offered to Google Play Music subscribers). In May 2014, prior to the official opening of the Music Key service, the independent music trading organization Worldwide Independent Network alleges that YouTube is using non-negotiable contracts with an undervalued independent label compared to other streaming services, stating that YouTube threatens to block label videos from public access if they do not agree to the new terms. In a statement to the Financial Times in June 2014, Robert Kyncl confirmed that this action is "to ensure that all content on the platform is governed by the terms of his new contract". Stating that 90% of the labels had reached agreement, he went on to say that "while we hope that we have [a] a 100% success rate, we understand that it is unlikely to be an achievable goal and therefore it is our responsibility to the user us and the industry to launch an improved music experience ". The Financial Times later reported that YouTube had reached an aggregate agreement with Merlin Network - a trade group representing more than 20,000 independent labels, to be included in the service. However, YouTube itself has not confirmed the deal.

Upon the opening of YouTube Red, it is stated that these same contract terms will apply to all members of the YouTube Partner Program; partners who do not accept the new terms and production sharing agreements associated with the YouTube Red service will make their videos completely blocked in areas where YouTube Red is available. The ESPN YouTube channel is an important party affected by the change; representative of ESPN's parent, The Walt Disney Company, stated that conflicts with third-party rights holders in the case of sports recordings contained in ESPN's YouTube videos prevented them from being offered on new terms. Some older videos are still on ESPN's main channel.

Similarly, the large amount of content licensed by Japanese and Korean record labels becomes unavailable in areas where YouTube Red is available. It is believed that the ability to download videos for offline viewing on YouTube Red is subject to doubts for Japanese media companies because of the need to monitor when, where and how content is used in accordance with Japanese copyright laws, their content is blocked under new terms.
