In November 2015,.xyz reached 1.5 million domain name registrations, possibly partly driven by Google's decision to use abc.xyz for its corporate website (Alphabet Inc.), one of the first major companies to use the domain. However, VeriSign domain name registration and others claim that the domain name registrar Network Solutions gives perhaps hundreds of thousands of these names by placing it into an opt-out customer account.
As of January 2016,.xyz is the sixth most registered domain name on the Internet. As of June 2016,.xyz is the top global top-level domain (gTLD) listed on the Internet, after.com,.net, and.org.
hooli.xyz, from the Silicon Valley television series, uses this TLD.
