A system administrator , or sysadmin , is the person responsible for the maintenance, configuration and operation of a reliable computer system; especially multi-user computers, such as servers. System administrators are trying to ensure that the work time, performance, resources, and security of the computers they manage meet the needs of users, without exceeding the set budget when doing so.

To meet this need, system administrators can acquire, install or upgrade computer components and software; providing routine automation; safeguarding security policies; solve the problem; train or supervise staff; or offer technical support for the project.

Many other staff work staff are associated with system administration. In larger companies, these can all be separate positions within the computer support department or the Information Service (IS). In smaller groups they can be shared by some sysadmins, or even one person.

  • The database administrator (DBA) manages the database system, and is responsible for data integrity and system efficiency and performance.
  • Network administrators manage network infrastructure such as switches and routers, and diagnose problems with this or with the behavior of computers connected to the network.

One of the main difficulties with teaching system administration as a formal university discipline is that industry and technology change much faster than the process of certifying books and public lectures. As new textbooks have spent years working through approval and committees, the specific technology they write may have changed significantly or become obsolete.

In addition, because of the practical nature of system administration and the availability of easy open-source server software, many system administrators enter the self-taught field.

Generally, a candidate will be required to have experience with the computer systems they expect to manage. In some cases, candidates are expected to have industry certifications such as Microsoft MCSA, MCSE, MCITP, Red Hat RHCE, Novell CNA, CNE, Cisco CCNA or CompTIA A or Network, Sun Certified SCNA, Linux Professional Institute, Linux Foundation Certified Engineer or Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator, among others.

Sometimes, almost exclusively on smaller sites, the role of the system administrator can be given to an expert user on the side or in place of the task.

Skill

The materials system administration includes the computer system and the way people use it in an organization. It requires knowledge of operating systems and applications, as well as hardware and software problem solving, but also knowledge of the goals that people in the organization use computers.

Perhaps the most important skill for a system administrator is troubleshooting - often under a variety of constraints and stress. Sysadmins are in a call when the computer system is damaged or malfunctioning, and should be able to quickly and precisely diagnose what is wrong and the best way to fix it. They may also need to have teamwork and communication skills; and able to install and configure hardware and software.

Sysadmins should understand the behavior of the software to propagate it and solve problems, and generally know some of the programming languages ​​used for scripting or automating routine tasks. The common sysadmin role is not to design or write new application software but when they are responsible for automating system or application configuration with various configuration management tools, the lines are somewhat opaque. Depending on the role of sysadmin and skillset they can be expected to understand the equivalent key/core concepts understood by a software engineer. That said, system administrators are not software engineers or developers, in the sense of work.

Especially when dealing with systems dealing with the Internet or business-critical systems, the sysadmins must have a strong understanding of computer security. In some organizations, computer security administration is a separate role that is responsible for overall security and maintenance of firewalls and intrusion detection systems, but all sysadmins are generally responsible for the security of computer systems.

Task

The responsibilities of the system administrator may include:

  • Analyze system logs and identify potential problems with computer systems.
  • Implement operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
  • Install and configure new hardware and software.
  • Add, remove, or update user account information, reset passwords, etc.
  • Answer technical questions and help users.
  • Responsibility for security.
  • Responsibility for documenting the system configuration.
  • Troubleshooting reported.
  • System performance adjustment.
  • Ensure that the network infrastructure is up and running.
  • Configure, add, and delete file systems.
  • Ensuring parity between development, test, and production environments.

In larger organizations, some of the tasks above can be shared between different system administrators or members of different organizational groups. For example, a dedicated individual (s) can implement all system upgrades, the Quality Assurance (QA) team can perform testing and validation, and one or more technical writers may be responsible for all technical documentation written for the company. System administrators, in larger organizations, tend not to be system architects, system engineers, or system designers.

In smaller organizations, the system administrator may also act as a technical support, Database Administrator, Network Administrator, Storage (SAN) Administrator or app analyst.
