Speedtest.net is a web service that provides free analysis of Internet access performance metrics, such as connection data rate and latency. Founded by Ookla in 2006, and based in Seattle, Washington.
This service measures bandwidth ( speed ) and the latency of a visitor's Internet connection to any of the 4,759 geographically dispersed (as of August 2016) servers located worldwide. Each test measures the data rate for the download direction, ie from the server to the user's computer, and the upload data rate, ie from the user's computer to the server. The test is done in the user's web browser or in the application. Until August 2017, more than 10 billion speed tests have been completed.
Previous tests were performed using the HTT protocol on Layer 7 of the OSI model. To further improve accuracy, Speedtest.net now performs tests via a direct TCP socket and uses a special protocol for communication between server and client.
The site also offers detailed statistics based on test results. This data has been used by many publications in the analysis of Internet access data rates worldwide.

Speed ââWave
The site offers a service where groups of friends can compare results against each other and as a group average. Badges are also provided for achievements like Highest Download Speed ââ and Low Latency . Badge given when Highest Download or Lowest Ping will be.
My Results
Ookla Speed ââTest also has a tool called "My Results" that lets you compare your upload speed and downloads graphically as well as the various servers you've tested. Users who have been through many Internet service providers, or who have more than one, can find value in this tool and can use it to choose the most efficient.
