The first screenshots were made with the first interactive computer circa 1960. Until the 1980s, the computer operating system did not have a built-in function to capture screenshots. Windows
Windows Vista and later includes a utility called Snipping Tool, first introduced in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. There are exceptions to what this method can capture. For example, content in a hardware overlay is not captured. This includes video images played by Windows Media Player 10 or earlier. Thus, special software may be required to capture video game screens.
Windows Phone
In Windows Phone 8, screenshots can be captured by pressing and holding the Power button of the phone and the Start button simultaneously. Screenshots are stored in the phone's native screen resolution under "screenshot" in the Photos hub. Its functionality is only available for Windows Phone 8 or later.
Combination screenshots for Windows Phone 8.1 and later is the Power button on the phone and the Volume Up button.
Xbox One
In March 2015, Xbox One can take a screenshot by double-clicking the Xbox button. Pressing Y button will then save it. The equivalent voice command for this action is "Xbox, take a screenshot".

Hardware overlay
On Windows systems, screenshots of games and media players sometimes fail, resulting in an empty rectangle. The reason for this is that the graphics go through the normal screen and go to the high-speed graphics processor on the graphics card by using a method called hardware overlay. Generally, there is no way to extract computed images back from the graphics card, although the software may exist for special cases or specific video cards.
One way that these images can be captured is to turn off the hardware overlay. Since many computers do not have hardware overlays, most programs are built to work without it, just a little slower. In Windows XP, this is disabled by opening the Display Properties menu, clicking on the "Settings" tab, clicking "Advanced", "Troubleshoot", and moving the Hardware Acceleration Slider to "None."
Free media player software can also use overlays but often have settings to avoid it or have special screenshot functionality.
Screen recording
The screen recording capability of multiple screen capture programs is a time-saving way to create instructions and presentations, but the resulting files are often large.
A common problem with video recording is the jump action, rather than flowing smoothly, due to the low frame rate. Although it gets faster all the time, the regular PC is not fast enough to play the video yet and simultaneously capture it on the professional image frequency, i. E. 30 frames/s. For many cases, high frame rate is not required. This is not a common problem if it only takes desktop video, which requires far less processing power than video playback, and is quite possible to capture at 30 frames/s. Some companies believe that the use of screenshots is a copyright infringement on their program, as this is a derivative work of widgets and other art created for the software. Regardless of copyright, screenshots may still be legally used under the principles of fair use in the US or fair transactions and similar laws in other countries.
