Motorola Mobility is a Chicago-based consumer electronics and telecommunications company founded in 2011. Motorola Mobility is currently owned by Lenovo after it was purchased from Google in 2014. Motorola Mobility was formed after a split from Motorola original on January 4, 2011. The split is structured in Motorola Mobility which takes the company's consumer-oriented product line, including the cell phone business and cable modem and set-top box for cable and satellite television services, while Motorola Solutions maintains a company-oriented product line company.
The company mainly produces smartphones and other mobile devices running the Android operating system developed by Google. In August 2011, just seven months after the split, Google acquired Motorola Mobility for US $ 12.5 billion in order to gain control over Motorola Mobility's patent portfolio so as to protect other Android vendors from lawsuits, the deal closes in May 2012. Shortly after Google sold its Motorola Mobility cable modem and set-top box business to Arris Group. Under Google's ownership, Motorola Mobility began to increase its focus on entry-level smartphone market, and under development ATAP began development on Project Ara, a platform for modular smartphones with interchangeable components.
Google's ownership of the company was short-lived. In January 2014, Google announced that it would sell most of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo, a Chinese technology company, for $ 2.91 billion. Sales, which excludes all but 2,000 Motorola and ATAP patents, its team-based division working on the Ara, was completed on October 30, 2014. Lenovo disclosed its intention to use Motorola Mobility as a way to expand into US smartphones. market.
In January 2016, after Lenovo's existing Lenovo mobile business merger in August 2015 with Motorola Mobility, it was announced that the company would begin to abolish "Motorola" as a publicly trademarked brand, replacing it with the "Moto" brand used in most of the latest devices, and Lenovo's "Vibe" brand. However, Motorola later clarified that the brand will continue to be used, but marketing will focus on the "Moto" and "Vibe" brands, while the full Motorola brand name will appear on its packaging and brand license. In November 2016, it was announced that Lenovo will stop releasing smartphones under its own name and Vibe brand, and that all future smartphones will only carry the Motorola "Moto" brand and logo.
In March 2017, the company stated that it would no longer deviate from Motorola's name, removing the moniker "Moto by Lenovo" to preserve the company's heritage.

History
On January 4, 2011, Motorola Inc. divided into two public companies; Motorola's solution takes a company-oriented corporate business unit, while the remaining consumer division is taken by Motorola Mobility. Motorola Mobility initially consists of mobile device business, which produces smartphones, mobile accessories including Bluetooth headphones, and home-based businesses, resulting in set-top boxes, end-to-end video solutions, cordless phones and cable modems. By law, the split is structured so that Motorola Inc. change its name to Motorola's Solution and spew Motorola Mobility as a new public company.
Under Google ownership
On August 15, 2011, Google announced that it would acquire Motorola Mobility for $ 12.5 billion, pending approval from regulators. Critics think of Google as a white knight, as Motorola recently suffered a quarter of losses in a row. Google plans to operate Motorola as an independent company. In a post on corporate blogs, Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page revealed that Motorola's acquisition of Motorola Mobility is a strategic move to strengthen Google's patent portfolio; at the time, the company had 17,000 patents, with 7,500 more patents pending. The expanded portfolio is to maintain the viability of its Android operating system, which has been the subject of many patent infringement claims between device vendors and other companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Oracle.
On November 17, 2011, Motorola announced that its shareholders supported Google's acquisition of a $ 12.5 billion company. The agreement received regulatory approval from the United States Department of Justice and the European Union on February 13, 2012. The agreement received subsequent approval from the Chinese authorities and was completed on May 22, 2012. Along with the completion of the acquisition, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha was replaced by Dennis Woodside, a former Senior Vice President at Google.
On August 13, 2012, Google announced that it will cut 4,000 employees and close a third of its premises, mostly outside the United States.
On December 19, 2012, it was announced that Arris Group would buy Motorola Mobility cable modem and set-top box business for $ 2.35 billion in cash-and-stock transactions.
In May 2013, Motorola opened a factory in Fort Worth, Texas, with the intent to assemble a special smartphone in the United States. At its peak, the factory employs 3,800 workers. On April 9, 2014, after Woodside's departure, the main product developer Rick Osterloh was named Motorola's new president.
Under Google's ownership, Motorola's market share will be driven by a focus on high-quality entry-level smartphones, aimed primarily at emerging markets; in the first quarter of 2014, Motorola sold 6.5 million phones - led by strong sales of lower-class MotoG, especially in markets like India, and in the UK - where companies accounted for 6% of smartphone sales sold in the quarter, up from almost zero. This goal is further compounded by the introduction of Moto E May 2014 - a low-end device aimed at smartphone owners first in emerging markets. In May 2014, Motorola announced that it would close the Fort Worth plant by the end of the year, citing the high cost of domestic production combined with weak Moto X sales (adjusted and assembled at the factory) and the company increasingly emphasized low-end devices and emerging markets.
Under Lenovo ownership
On January 29, 2014, Google announced it will, pending regulatory approval, sell Motorola Mobility to Chinese technology company Lenovo for US $ 2.91 billion in cash-and-stock transactions, seeing $ 750 million in Lenovo's shares to Google. Google maintains Advanced Technology & amp; The project unit (which is integrated into the main Android team), and all but 2000 corporate patents. Lenovo has publicly disclosed its intention to enter the US smartphone market, and has previously expressed interest in acquiring BlackBerrys, but reportedly blocked by the Canadian government due to national security concerns. Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing stated that "iconic acquisition of brands, innovative product portfolios, and highly talented global teams will soon make Lenovo a strong global competitor in smartphones." The acquisition was completed on October 30, 2014. The company remains headquartered in Chicago, and continues to use the Motorola brand, but Liu Jun - president of Lenovo's mobile device business, is president of the company.
On January 26, 2015, due to its new ownership, Motorola Mobility re-launched its product line in China with the local release of the second generation Moto X, and the upcoming Moto G LTE and Moto X Pro releases (a re-branded Nexus 6) in time for Lunar New Year.
Lenovo maintains a "hands-off" approach with respect to Motorola product development; chief designer Jim Wicks explained that "Google has very little influence and Lenovo has the same." Companies continue to engage in practices adopted under Google, such as using almost "stock" Android, weakening competitors' prices while offering superior hardware (as further pushed by Lenovo), and putting greater focus on direct-to-consumer phone sales not locked in the United States market (compared to the subsidized version of the carrier). On July 28, 2015, Motorola unveiled three new devices, and the first under proprietary Lenovo - the third generation MotoG, Moto X Play, and Moto X Style - in three separate events.
Integration with Lenovo
In August 2015, Lenovo announced that it would incorporate existing smartphone divisions, including design, development, and manufacturing, into Motorola Mobility units. The announcement came in addition to 3,200 employees who cut across the company. As a result of the changes, Motorola Mobility will be responsible for the development and production of its own "Moto" product line, as well as Lenovo's own "Vibe" range.
In January 2016, Lenovo announced that the name "Motorola" would be lower in public use for the brand of "Moto". Motorola Mobility then clarified that the "Motorola" brand will continue to be used in product packaging and through its brand license. The company goes on to say that "Motorola's legacy is near and dear to us as Motorola's product designer, engineer and employee, and is obviously very important to many of you who have had a long relationship with us.We plan to continue it under our parent company, Lenovo. "
In response to claims by Lenovo executives that only high-end devices to be manufactured under the name "Moto", with lower-end devices incorporated into Lenovo's "Vibe" brand, Motorola Mobility clarified its plans and explained that it will continue to release low-end products under the Moto brand, including the popular Moto G and Moto E lines. Motorola states that there will be an overlap between the Vibe and Moto line at some price and region point, but both brands will have different "identities" and experiences. Moto devices will be positioned as "innovative" and "trend" products, and Vibe will be the "mass market challenger brand".
In November 2016, it was reported that Lenovo will brand all future smartphones under the Moto brand.
In March 2017, during an interview with CNET, Motorola Chairman and President Aymar de Lencquesaing stated that the company would no longer deviate from Motorola's name, removing the moniker "Moto by Lenovo" to preserve the company's heritage.

Razr
Since July 2003, Motorola released Razr V3 in the third quarter of 2004. Due to its flashy appearance and slim profile, it was initially marketed as an exclusive fashion phone, but in a year, the price was lowered and it was very successful, selling over 50 million units on the month July 2006. During the four-year Razr, Motorola sold more than 130 million units, becoming the world's best-selling clamshell phone.
Motorola released another phone based on the Razr design as part of the 4LTR line. These include Pebl U6, Slvr L6, Slvr L7 (more expensive variant of Slvr L6), Razr V3c (CDMA), Razr V3i (with camera and enhanced appearance), V3x (supports 3G technology and has 2 megapixel camera), Razr V3xx (supporting 3.5G technology) and Razr maxx V6 (supporting 3.5G technology and having a 2 megapixel camera) was announced in July 2006.
The Razr series was marketed until July 2007, when the Motorola Razr2 series was successfully released. Marketed as a slimmer and more stable Razr design, the Razr 2 includes more features, improved phone audio quality, and touch sensitive external displays. The new models are V8, V9, and V9m. However, Razr2 sales are only half of the original in the same period.
Because Motorola is relying heavily on Razr and its derivatives and is slow to develop new products in emerging markets for feature-rich touchscreens and 3G phones, Razr's appeal is declining while rival offers like LG Chocolate, BlackBerry, and iPhone are captured, leading Motorola to finally lag in behind Samsung and LG in market share for mobile phones. Motorola's strategy of seizing market share by selling tens of millions of cheap Razr cut margins and resulted in huge losses in the cellular division.
Motorola took advantage of the Razr too long and it was also slow to adopt 3G. While Nokia managed to maintain its superiority in the worldwide mobile market, Motorola was beaten first by Samsung and then LG Electronics. In 2007, without new mobile phones offered by carriers, Motorola sold tens of millions of Razrs and offshoot them by cutting prices, causing the margin to collapse in the process. In January 2007, Motorola CEO Ed Zander rode a yellow bike to the stage in Las Vegas for his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show. Zander left for Dell, while his successor failed to overturn the troubled mobile phone handset division.
Motorola continued to experience severe problems with its mobile/handset division in the 2000s, posting a record $ 1.2 billion loss in Q4 2007. Its global competitiveness continued to decline: from 18.4% market share in 2007, to 9.7% on 2008. In 2010 Motorola's global market share has dropped to seventh place, leading to speculation of corporate bankruptcy. While other Motorola businesses grew rapidly, poor results from the Mobile Devices Unit as well as the 2008 financial crisis delayed the company's plans to spin off its mobile division.
Android reach
In 2008, Sanjay Jha took over as Motorola's co-chief executive officer of Motorola's mobile device division; under Jha's control, significant changes took place in Motorola's mobile phone business, including the most prominent, a shift to the newly introduced Android operating system as a single smartphone platform, replacing Symbian and Windows Mobile. In August 2009, Motorola introduced Cliq, its first Android device, to T-Mobile USA. The device also features a user interface known as Motoblur, which aims to gather information from various sources, such as e-mail and social networking services, into a consistent interface.
A month later, Motorola launched the Droid, Verizon Wireless's first Android phone, which was released on November 8, 2009. Supported with a marketing campaign by Verizon, which promotes the device as a direct competitor to the iPhone with the slogan "iDon't", "Droid Does", Droid is significant success for Motorola and Verizon; Flurry estimates that at least 250,000 Droid smartphones have been sold within the first week of availability. PC World considers sales to be the mainstream growth indicator for the Android platform as a whole. Droid is also named "Gadget of the Year" for 2009 by Time . Other Droid -branded Devices will be released by Verizon, though not all of them are made by Motorola.
In 2010, Motorola released the Droid X along with other devices like Charm, Flipout, and i1. In July 2010, Motorola reported that it had sold 2.7 million smartphones during the second quarter of 2010; an increase of 400,000 units during the first quarter. Jha stated that the company is in a "strong position to continue to increase our share in the rapidly growing smartphone market and [improve] our operating performance." In the third quarter earnings report, Jha reiterated that Droid X sells "very good". Atrix 4G, Droid Bionic, XOOM, and Droid RAZR
On January 5, 2011, Motorola Mobility announced that Atrix 4G and Droid Bionic each headed to AT & amp; T and Verizon, with the expected release date in Q1 of 2011. Atrix was released on February 22 as the world's first mobile phone with both Dual-Core Processor and 1 GB of RAM. The phone also has optional peripherals such as Multimedia Dock and Laptop Dock that launches Webtop UI. On February 24, two days after Atrix's release, the company released Motorola Xoom, the world's first Android 3.0 tablet, and followed it shortly with an update to make it the first Android 3.1 tablet in the world.
In the fourth quarter of 2011, Motorola launched the RAZR Droid, the thinnest 4G LTE smartphone in the world at that time only 7.1 mm. The Droid Razr displays Kevlar support, the same is used in bulletproof vests, and the Gorilla Glass faceplate. This phone is very successful through Verizon Wireless, and many color variants released. In addition, the Maxx version of the RAZR Droid with extended battery was released at CES 2012. Droid RAZR MAXX won the CTIA "Best Smartphone" award. The company also announced new products in late 2011 and early 2012 such as the Xoom 2 tablet, motoACTV fitness watch with Android, and Droid 4 with 4G LTE for Verizon Wireless.
Although Jha manages to restore some of the lost sheen to Motorola Mobility, he is still struggling against Samsung and Apple. Even among Android manufacturers, Motorola has lagged behind Samsung, HTC, and LG in market share in the second quarter of 2011. This may be due to delays in releasing 4G LTE-capable devices, as well as setting new product prices too high. Jha was replaced by Dennis Woodside as CEO in May 2012, when the Google acquisition was completed.
Motorola releases Droid RAZR HD (and Droid RAZR MAXX HD) as its flagship device in 2012, featuring enhancements over the 2011 RAZR. The lower end of RAZR M is released, along with the Intel-backed RAZR i. Through the end of 2012 to the third quarter of 2013, no further devices are released, except for lower end RAZR D1 and D3 devices for Latin America.
Moto X
In an interview in August 2013, VP of Corporate Management of Motorola products, Lior Ron explained that the company will focus on producing fewer products to focus on quality rather than quantity. Ron stated, "Our mandate from Google, from Larry, is really to innovate and take a long-term bet If you have such a mentality, it's about quality and not quantity".
Speaking at the D11 conference in Palos Verdes, California, in May 2013, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside announced that a new mobile device would be built by his company at a 500,000 square foot facility near Fort Worth, Texas, previously used by Nokia. The facility will hire 2,000 people in August 2013 and the new phone, to be named "Moto X", will be available to the public in October 2013. Moto X displays Google Now software, and various sensors and two microprocessors that will mean the user can "interacting with [the phone] in a way quite different from what you can do with other devices". Media reports suggest that the phone will be able to activate functions early on based on "awareness" of what the user is doing at any given moment.
On July 3, 2013, Motorola released full-color page ads in many leading newspapers across the United States. The ad claims that Motorola's next mobile phone is "the first smartphone designed, engineered, and assembled in the United States". On the same day that the ad was published, ABC News reported that customers will be able to choose the color of the phone, as well as adding special carvings and wallpapers at the time of purchase.
In early July 2013, Wall Street Journal reported that Motorola will spend nearly US $ 500 million on global advertising and marketing for the device. The amount is equivalent to half of Apple's total advertising budget for 2012.
On August 1, 2013, Motorola Mobility unveiled the Motoà © smartphone, X. It was released on August 23, 2013 in the United States and Canada.
On September 5, 2014, Motorola Mobility released the Moto X smartphone (2nd generation). This continues the company's trend of letting consumers customize their devices through their Moto Maker website, and add new customization options like more real wood options and new skin options. The device itself also gets a lot of buzz in the specs; with a new 5.2-inch (13Ã,cm) 1080p, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor 2.5 GHz faster, and an enhanced 13 megapixel rear camera capable of recording 4k resolution video with LED duel flash. The device also comes with new software features along with a new infrared remote sensor.
Moto X Play and Moto X Style smartphones were announced in July 2015, and released in September 2015. Many customers who have ordered customized Moto X Pure Editions through the Motorola website have experienced a delay in receiving their devices. These delays have been linked to problems including: manufacturing problems, lack of parts needed to complete a dedicated phone assembly (black front, Verizon SIM card and 64 GB version), possibly redesign because the initial phone has a flaw that causes one of the speakers facing forward for high-volume ticking and a few days delay cleaning US Customs at FedEx Memphis, TN hub due to issues related to import documents..the x4 photo 2017 with 3Gb/4Gb/6Gb RAM variant.
