iTunes ( ) is a media player, media library, internet radio broadcaster, and mobile device management app developed by Apple Inc. It was announced on January 9, 2001. It is used to play, download, and organize digital multimedia files, including music and video, on personal computers running MacOS and Windows operating systems. Content must be purchased through the iTunes Store, while iTunes is software that allows users to manage their purchases.

The main and original focus of iTunes is music, with libraries that offer organizations, collections, and storage of users' music collections. It can be used to copy songs from CDs, as well as play content with the use of dynamic and smart playlists. Options for voice optimization exist, as well as how to share iTunes libraries wirelessly. In 2005, Apple expanded its core features with video support, then added podcasts, e-books, and sections to manage mobile apps for the Apple iOS operating system, which was last discontinued in 2017.

The original iPhone Smartphone requires iTunes for activation and, until iOS 5 release in 2011, iTunes is required to install software updates for the company's iOS devices. Newer iOS devices rely less on iTunes software, though they can still be used for backup and recovery of phone content, as well as for file transfers between individual iOS computers and apps. iTunes has received significant criticism for the bloated user experience, with Apple adopting features that cover everything on iTunes rather than sticking to its original music-based destination.

Ketersediaan platform

iTunes is available for both Windows and macOS personal computers. In May 2017, Microsoft and Apple announced that they will bring iTunes to Microsoft Store by the end of 2017 to work on Windows 10 S devices, limited to software available on the Microsoft Store. However, Apple told ZDNet in December that "[need] a little more time to do it right", and thus will not be available in 2017. Apple released the Microsoft Store version on April 26, 2018.

History

SoundJam MP, released by Casady & amp; Greene in 1998, was renamed "iTunes" when Apple bought it in 2000. The main developer of the software moved to Apple as part of the acquisition, and simplifies the user interface SoundJam, adds the ability to burn CDs, and remove the recording feature and skin support. The first version of iTunes, which is the promotion dubbed "Jukebox Software Best and Most Easy to Use in the World", published on January 9, 2001. The next release of iTunes often coincide with new hardware device, and gradually includes support for new features , including "smart playlists", iTunes Store, and new audio formats.

Music

Metadata and import music

iTunes has a music library. Each track has attributes, called metadata, which users can edit, including renaming artists, albums, and genres, release years, artwork, among other additional settings. The software supports importing digital audio tracks which can then be transferred to iOS devices, as well as supporting ripping content from CDs. iTunes supports WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, AAC, and MP3 formats. It uses the Gracenote music database to provide a list of song names for audio CDs. When a user copies content from a CD, iTunes tries to match the song to the Gracenote service. For self-published CDs, or from anonymous recording labels, iTunes will usually only include tracks as numbered entries ("Track 1", "Track 2") on unnamed albums by unknown artists, requiring data input Manually.

File metadata is displayed in user libraries in columns, including albums, artists, genres, composers, and more. Users can enable or disable different columns, as well as change the display settings.

Custom playlists

Introduced in 2004, "Party Shuffle" chose songs to play randomly from the library, even though the user can press a button to skip the current song and go to the next song in the list. This feature was later renamed "iTunes DJ", before it was discontinued altogether, replaced by a simpler "Up Next" feature that mainly lost some "iTunes DJ" functionality.

Introduced on iTunes 8 in 2008, " Genius " can automatically generate playlists from user libraries that "run together". "Genius" transmits information about the user's library to Apple anonymously, and evolves over time to improve the recommendation system. It can also suggest purchases to fill "holes" in the library. This feature was updated with iTunes 9 in 2009 to offer a "Genius Mix", which generates playlists based on a particular music genre.

"Smart playlists" are a set of playlists that can be set to automatically filter libraries based on a list of customized selection criteria, such as database queries. Some criteria can be entered to manage smart playlists. Examples of selection criteria include genres such as Christmas music, songs that have not been played recently, or the songs most heard for a certain period of time.

Share library

Through the "Home Sharing" feature, users can share their iTunes library wirelessly. The computer firewall must allow network traffic, and users should specifically enable sharing in the iTunes preferences menu. There are also iOS apps that can transfer content without the internet. In addition, users can manage the storage system connected to the network, and connect to the storage system through the application.

Artwork printing

To compensate for the "boring" design of standard CDs, iTunes can print custom-made jewelry boxes. After burning a CD from a playlist, one can select that playlist and open a dialogue box with several print options, including "Themes" that are different from album artwork.

Voice process

iTunes includes voice processing features, such as equalization, "sound enhancement" and crossfade. There is also a feature called Sound Check , which automatically adjusts the playback volume of all songs in the library to the same level.

Video

In May 2005, video support was introduced to iTunes with the release of iTunes 4.8, although it was limited to the bonus feature part of the album purchase. The following October, Apple introduced iTunes 6, enabling support to buy and view video content purchased from the iTunes Store. At launch, the store offers popular events from the ABC network, including Desperate Housewives and Lost, along with the Disney Channel series That's So Raven and < The Suite Life of Zack and Cody . Then-CEO Steve Jobs told the press that "We're doing for the video what we've done for music - we make it easy and affordable to buy and download, play on your computer, and take you on your iPod".

In 2008, Apple and the movie studio chose "iTunes Digital Copy", features on certain DVDs and Blu-ray discs that allow digital copies on iTunes and associated media players.

Podcasts

In June 2005, Apple updated iTunes with support for podcasts. Users can subscribe to podcasts, change update frequency, determine how many episodes to download, and how much to delete.

Similar to the song, "Smart playlist" can be used to control podcasts in playlists, set criteria such as date and number of times listened.

Books

In January 2010, Apple announced the iPad tablet, and along with it, a new app for it was called iBooks. This app allows users to purchase e-books from the iTunes Store, manage them through iTunes, and transfer content to their iPad.

Apps

In 2008, Apple introduced the native mobile app for its iOS operating system. On iOS, the dedicated App Store app serves as a storefront to browse, buy and manage apps, whereas iTunes on a computer has a special section for apps, not separate apps. In September 2017, Apple updated iTunes to version 12.7, removing the App Store part in the process. However, the following month, iTunes 12.6.3 was also released, maintaining the App Store, with 9to5Mac noting that the secondary release was positioned by Apple as "required for some businesses deploying internal apps".

iTunes Store

In April 2003, Apple introduced the iTunes Store, which was named "iTunes Music Store". This allows users to buy and download songs, with 200,000 songs available at launch. In the first week, customers bought more than a million songs. Purchased music is protected by FairPlay, an encryption layer called digital rights management (DRM). The use of DRM, which limits devices capable of playing purchased files, triggers an attempt to remove protection mechanisms. Finally, after an open letter to the music industry at the time-CEO Steve Jobs in February 2007, Apple introduced the DRM-free music option on the iTunes Store in April 2007, followed by an entire music catalog without DRM in January 2009.

In October 2005, Apple announced that movies and television shows will be available through the iTunes Store, using DRM protection.

iTunes U

In May 2007, Apple announced the launch of "iTunes U" through the iTunes Store, which gave university lectures from top US universities.

With iTunes version 12.7 in August 2017, the iTunes U collection becomes part of the Podcasts app.

iTunes on Cloud and iTunes Match

In June 2011, Apple announced "iTunes in the Cloud", where music purchases were stored on Apple's servers and available for automatic download on new devices. For user-owned music, such as content taken from a CD, the company introduced "iTunes Match", a feature that can upload content to Apple servers, match it with its catalog, convert its quality to AAC 256 kbps format, and make it available to other devices.

Internet radio and music stream

When iTunes was first released, it came with support for Internet radio tuner service Kerbango. In June 2013, the company announced iTunes Radio, a free music streaming service. In June 2015, Apple announced Apple Music, a paid music streaming service, and subsequently renamed iTunes Radio to Beats 1, a radio station that accompanies Apple Music.

iPhone Activation

iTunes is used to activate the initial iPhone model. Starting with iPhone 3G in June 2008, activation does not require iTunes, using activation at point of sale.

Ping

With the release of iTunes 10 in September 2010, Apple announced iTunes Ping, which later CEO Steve Jobs described as "the discovery of social music". It features a reminder on Facebook, including profiles and ability to follow other users. Ping was suspended in September 2012.

Device sync

Prior to iOS 5, released in October 2011, iTunes was required to update iOS devices with new software versions. iTunes can be used to back up iOS device content, and used for recovery. Due to the lack of file manager, such as Windows' File Explorer, users must use the iTunes "File Sharing" feature to transfer content to and from the app.

Criticism

Security

The Telegraph reported in November 2011 that Apple has been aware of a security vulnerability since 2008 that would allow unauthorized third parties to install "updates" for iTunes user software. Apple fixed the problem before the Telegraph ' report, and told the media that "The security and privacy of our users is very important", even though this is questioned by security forces. Researcher Brian Krebs, who told the publication that "A prominent security researcher warned Apple about this dangerous vulnerability in mid 2008, but the company waited more than 1,200 days to fix its shortcomings".

Boiling software

iTunes was repeatedly accused of bloat as part of Apple's efforts to turn it from a program that plays music to a multimedia platform that covers everything. Former PC World editor Ed Bott accused the company of being hypocritical in its advertising attacks on Windows for similar practices.
