Google Keep is a recording service developed by Google. Launched on March 20, 2013, Google Keep is available on the web, and has a mobile app for Android and iOS mobile operating systems. Keep offers various tools for taking notes, including text, lists, images, and audio. Users can set reminders, which are integrated with Google Now. Text from images can be extracted using optical character recognition, and voice recordings can be transcribed. The interface allows for the view of a single column or multi-column view. Notes can be color-coded, and labels can be applied to organizations. The update further adds functionality to pin notes, and to collaborate on notes with other Keep users in real-time.

Google Keep has received mixed reviews. Reviews right after launch in 2013 praised the speed, sound record quality, sync, and widgets that can be placed on the main Android screen. Reviews in 2016 have criticized the lack of formatting options, the inability to undo changes, and the interface offers only two display modes which are not preferred as they handle long notes. However, Google Keep receives praise for features including universal device access, native integration with other Google services, and the option to convert photos into text through optical character recognition.

Features

Google Keep lets users create different types of notes, including text, lists, images, and audio. Users can set reminders, integrated with Google Now, with options for time or location. Text from images can be extracted using optical character recognition technology. Sound recordings created via Keep are automatically transcribed. Keep can turn text notes into checklists. Users can choose between one column view and multi-column view. Notes can be color-coded, with options for white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, blue or gray. Users can press the "Copy to Google Doc" button that automatically copies all text to the new Google Documents document. Users can make notes and lists by sound. Notes can be categorized using labels, with label lists in the app's navigation bar.

Update

In November 2014, Google introduced a real-time record-keeping feature between different Keep users, as well as search features specified by attributes, such as color, sharing status, or the type of content in a note. In October 2016, Google added the ability for users to pin notes. In February 2017, Google integrated Google Keep with Google Docs, providing access to records when using Docs on the web. Previous Google assistants can keep a shopping list in Google Keep. This feature was moved to Google Express in April 2017, which resulted in a severe loss of functionality. In July 2017, Google updated Keep on Android with the ability for users to undo and redo changes.

Reception

2013

In a May 2013 review, Alan Henry of Lifehacker writes that the interface is "colorful and easy to use", and that color actually serves a purpose in organization and contrast. Henry praised the speed, sound note quality, sync, and Android main screen widgets. He criticized the web interface, as well as the lack of iOS apps.

In a January 2016 review, JR Raphael of Computerworld wrote that "Keep is very close to being the ideal tool for me to collect and manage all my personal and work related records and, as evidenced by the fact that I keep using it, the positive things outweigh the negatives for me and make them the best choice for all my needs, "praising what he calls" Keep killer features, namely simplicity, "easy universal access", and genuine integration with other Google services. However, it characterizes the lack of the option of Keep formatting, the inability to undo or restore changes, and the missing search function in the record as "lingering weakness".

In a July 2016 review, Jill Duffy of PC Magazine wrote that the interface was described as "simplicity," and criticized it for offering lists and grid views that did not make searching for information quickly or easily. Added that "Most of my notes are text-based recipes, which are pretty long", Duffy says that the list view is "worse" than the grid view because it only shows "one note at a time, and it's the most recently edited note." He writes that the web interface lacks the functionality that is in the app. A mobile app that offers to take photos and run optical character recognition for scans is changed to text described as a "shining star", with the comment "It's a great feature, and it works great." He also criticized the lack of format choices, and the "sharing option is possible but not very subtle".
