Features

Google Duo video calls are in 720p HD video. It is optimized for low bandwidth mobile networks via WebRTC and uses QUIC via UDP. Further optimization is achieved through video quality degradation through network quality monitoring. "Knock Knock" shows a live preview of the caller before the recipient picks up, which Google says is "making calls more like invitations than interruptions". This app automatically switches between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.

A year later in March 2018, video and sound messages are added to the Duo. Users can leave messages up to 30 seconds for unavailable contacts. These messages can then be viewed by others, with the option to call afterwards.
