Google Code-in ( GCI ) is an annual programming competition hosted by Google Inc. which allows pre-university students to complete the tasks set by various open source partner organizations. The contest was originally the Google Open Open Participation Contest, but in 2010, the format was changed to its current status. Students who complete the task of winning the certificate and T-shirt. Each organization also selects two major award winning prizes who will get a trip to Google Headquarters located in Mountain View, California.

This program started as the Google Open Participation Contest. In 2010, the program was changed to Google Code-in. After the 2014 edition, Google Melange is replaced by a separate website for Google Code-in. Mauritius, an African country, participated for the first time in 2016, and was noticed for a strong debut and in 2017, producing the first Grand Prize winner.

Feasibility
Students must be between 13 and 17 years of age (inclusive) to participate. In addition, students must upload a parent consent form as well as some documentation proving enrollment in a pre-university program.
Program
Google partners with certain open source organizations, all of whom have previous experience working with Google's open source programs like Google Summer of Code. These organizations come with stand-alone "bite-sized" tasks designed for pre-university students to complete. When the contest begins, students can register and claim the assignment. Upon claiming, students will have a certain period of time to complete the task and can receive help from mentors and the organizational community. Students may request an extension of time if required.
Gift
Students who complete one assignment get a certificate. Students who complete three tasks get a T-shirt next to the certificate. There is a maximum of one shirt and one certificate per student. At the end of the competition, each organization will choose two students as the grand prize winner and they will visit Google Mountain View, California, US headquarters for a four-day trip with an award ceremony, an opportunity to meet Google engineers and a day of sightseeing in San Francisco.
