The terms Google bomb and Googlewashing refer to practices that cause the website to rank highly in web search engine results because search terms are irrelevant, unrelated or off-topic by linking many. Google bombing is for business, political or comedy (or some combination thereof). Competition
In May 2004, the Dark Blue and SearchGuild websites worked together to create what they called "SEO Challenges" for Google bombing the phrase "nigrit ultramarine".
Contests sparked controversy on the internet, as some groups fear that search engine optimization companies (SEOs) will abuse the techniques used in the competition to change questions more relevant to the average user. This fear is offset by the belief that Google will change their algorithm based on the methods used by Google bombers.

Political activism
Some website operators have adapted Google's bombing techniques to do "spamdexing". Promoters using this technique often target forums with low reader traffic, in hopes of flying under moderator radar. Another technique is for Internet domain name owners to set up domain DNS entries so that all subdomains are directed to the same server. The operator then sets up the server so that the page request generates a page full of desired Google search terms, each linking to a subdomain of the same site, with the same title as the subdomain in the requested URL. Often subdomains match the linked phrases, with spaces being replaced with underscores or hyphens. Because Google treats subdomains as distinct sites, the effect of many interdependent subdomains is the boost for PageRank from that subdomain and from any other linked sites.
On February 2, 2007, many have noticed changes in the Google algorithm that greatly affected, among other things, the Google bomb: only about 10% of Google's bombs started on February 15, 2007. This was largely due to Google fixing its ratings from PageRank.
Quixtar Bomb
Quixtar, a multi-level marketing company, has been accused by critics of using a large network of websites to move sites critical of Quixtar lower in search engine rankings.
