The Goo Goo Dolls (originally Sex Maggot) is an American rock band formed in 1985 in Buffalo, New York, by guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist/vocalist Robby Takac, and drummer George Tutuska. Mike Malinin was the band's drummer from December 1994 to December 27, 2013 (but did not become an official member until 1998). Although famous for their commercially successful single "Iris" 1998, they have had several other famous singers including "Name" and "Naked" from 1995 A Boy Named Goo , "Slide", "Black Balloon "," Dizzy ", and" Broadway "from 1998 Dizzy Up the Girl ," Here Is Gone "from 2002 Gutterflower ," Better Days "," Give Little "and" Stay with You "from 2006 Let Love In (although" Give A Little Bit "was originally released on CD/DVD live 2004 Live in Buffalo: July 4, 2004 ), and "Home" from 2010 Something to Rest Us . The Goo Goo Dolls has the top 19 singles on various charts, and has sold over 12 million albums worldwide.

Histori

Asal-usul dan musik awal (1985-1993)

The band's original lineup included Johnny Rzeznik (guitar, vocals), Robby Takac (bass, vocals), and George Tutuska (drums, percussion). Takac and Tutuska had long been friends at school and met Rzeznik when he played in The Beaumonts with Takac cousin Paul Takac and close friend Michael Harvey who became inspiration for the band. The trio takes their name from the True Detective ad for a toy called Goo Goo Doll. "We're young and we're a garage band not trying to get a deal.we have a show that night and need a name. This is the best we made, and for some reason it's stuck. If I have five minutes left I'll definitely choose a better name ", says John. With Takac as their lead singer, the band released their first album, Goo Goo Dolls in 1987 on Mercenary Records, but was captured in 1988 by Celluloid Records, a larger recording company. They played around Buffalo's underground music circuits for punk bands like SNFU, Dag Nasty, ALL, The Dead Milkmen, Green Gang, Doughboys, and DRI and played with fellow Buffalo bands. The band released their second album Jed in 1989.

The band released their third album, Hold Me Up , in 1990 and featured Rzeznik as the lead vocalist on five tracks, including the single, "There You Are" - as well as their favorite concert, "Two Days in February". After being embraced by local campus radio and punk scenes (including playing a place like CBGB), the third release of Goo Goo Dolls included elements of heavy metal, pop rock, and punk rock. In 1991, the song "I'm Awake Now" was recorded for the Freddy's Dead soundtrack: The Final Nightmare .

Car Wash Superstar , released in 1993, received significant media attention. Critical successes and pushing their recent album sales resulted in a larger budget than Metal Blade Records. The album was partly recorded at Studio Metalworks in Mississauga, Ontario. "We Are the Normal" (single where Rzeznik asked frontman Paul Westerberg of The Replacements to write the lyrics) received a great boost to play on campus and independent radio, while his video was featured on the 120 Minutes MTV program. "Fallin 'Down" broke into the 1993 soundtrack from the hit movie Pauly Shore Son in Law .

Mainstream breakthrough , legal issues, and the departure of Tutuska (1993-1997)

Shortly after recording the band's fifth album A Boy Named Goo, Tutuska was kicked out of the band. The band moved forward from this 31 December 1994 incident, hired Mike Malinin, and toured strictly.

A Boy Named Goo , released in 1995, has an interesting rock sound, and became one of the most successful alternative rock albums of the mid-1990s. It's sold simple at the moment; However, it was not until the single "Name" release that the band experienced decent commercial success. A Boy Named Goo became the first album in Metal Blade history to achieve double-platinum status. This success, however, proved bitter, as the band found themselves in a legal battle with Metal Blade records. The band filed a lawsuit against Metal Blade, claiming that they did not get royalties from the sale of their album, which was associated with "a very unfair, one-sided and unworkable contract" signed by the band in 1987. The two sides reached an settlement that the band has signed to the Metal Blade distribution label Warner Bros. Records, where the band released their sixth album, Dizzy Up the Girl , in 1998. The undeniable "Name" success marks a fundamental change in the band's sound from alternative rock to more mainstream "adult orientated rock "(AOR) that disappointed many original band fans. It is the "Name" that has made the band popular and they can make guest appearances in Beverly Hills, 90210, Charmed, and even reward Michael Jackson.

"Iris" and superstardom (1997- 2005)

Rzeznik was approached to write the song for the soundtrack of City of Angels, and the final product was "Iris". The song prompted the band to become a star, as it remained on top of Billboard Hot 100 Airplay charts to break the 18-week record and spend 4 weeks at No. 1. 1 on the Billboard's Pop Songs charts. Later that year, was nominated for three Grammys. According to several interviews with Rzeznik, he suffered a serious attack from the author's block when he was approached, and almost quit the band a few days before he wrote the song.

"Iris" is included in Triple-platinum Dizzy Up the Girl, and is among the top ten hit songs "Slide", "Black Balloon", "Broadway", and "Dizzy" from the same album.. In 2001, Goos released their first compilation CD, What I Learned About Ego, Opinion, Art & amp; Trade . Furthermore, Gutterflower (2002) earned a gold certification, resulting in hits "Here Is Gone", "Sympathy", and "Big Machine". On July 4, 2004, the band performed a free concert in their hometown of Buffalo, playing through the rain floods that can be seen on DVDs released later that year. This DVD also contains a studio version of the Goo Goo Dolls cover of "Give a Little Bit" by Supertramp. The single reached the top of the Top 40 Adult charts in 2005.

July 4, 2004 has been proclaimed as "Goo Goo Dolls Day" in her home country, Buffalo, New York.

Let Love In (2005-2007 )

In 2006, Goo Goo Dolls marked their 20th anniversary with their new album Let Love In , which included studio recording "Give a Little Bit" and 10 other top radio singles "Better Days", " Stay with You ", and" Let Love In ". With their third consecutive single ("Let Love In") from the album, Goo Goo Dolls hit a top 12 top 10 hits record in Adult Top 40 history, beating Matchbox Twenty and Sheryl Crow to Matchbox Twenty releasing Exile on Mainstream and the release of Goo Goo Dolls from "Before It's Too Late" from Transformers Soundtrack, which left both groups with 13 top 10 hits on Adult Top 40. Goo Goo Dolls plans to release another single from Let Love In >, "Without You Here", as well as a song from the July 2007 Transformers film entitled "Before It's Too Late", originally titled "Fiction". To promote the new single, Goo Goo Dolls featured "Before It's Too Late" on both The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on June 8, 2007, and again at The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on 22 June 2007. In July 2007 the band discussed their overall career and gave live performances in Personal Session A & amp; E. Rzeznik stated that after the release of "Without You Here" and their summer tour with Lifehouse and Colbie Caillat, the band will return to the studio to start working on their next album, the ninth overall.

On June 27, 2007, Goo Goo Dolls appeared to a sold-out crowd at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. Performance aired on HDNet in high definition on Sunday, September 30th. The entire concert was released as a DVD in a limited edition version of their 2008 release, Vol.2 .
