The four star rating is the ranking of every four-star officer described by the NATO code of-9. The four-star officers are often the most senior commanders in the military service, having the rank of a full admiral, (full) general, or air marshal head. The term is also used by some armed forces not members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

At the Australian Defense Force, the ranks of commissioned officers receive a four-star rating:
- Admiral (rank of four-star Australian Navy)
- General (four-star rating of Australian Army)

This four star rating is kept in Australia for the Chief of Defense Forces, the highest position in peace time.

The General/Admiral is the highest rank in the Canadian Armed Forces as defined in the National Defense Act. Usually, only one officer, Chief of Defense Staff, carries the rank of full admiral or general at one time. However, the crown could authorize additional rank officers in the rankings for special cases such as for Canadian officers in the position of Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, normally the former NATO-backed Chief of Staff of Defense for the assignment.
Queen of Canada, Elizabeth II, is the Supreme Commander of the Canadian Armed Forces. However, in line with the Patent Letters, 1947, the duties and titles of commander-in-chief were usually carried out by the Governor-General of Canada. The National Defense Minister, being not a member of the Canadian army or within the military chain of command, has no rank. Prince Philip holds the rank of four-admiral at the Royal Canadian Navy in an honorary capacity in 2011.
Prior to unification in 1968, the head of the marshal ( marÃÆ' à © chal en chef de l'air ) was a four star equivalent to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
