Best music streaming app: Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon and ...

This is a comparison of online music storage services (Cloud Music Service), an Internet service that allows uploading owned or licensed music to the cloud for listening on multiple devices.

There are three great services - Amazon Music, Apple's iTunes Match, and Google Play Music - each incorporating an online music store (see comparison), with songs purchased from an associated music store not included in storage limits. In addition to the additional storage space, the main additional feature provided at an annual cost by Apple (and formerly Amazon.com) is "scan-and-match", which checks the music files on the computer and adds a copy of the tracks that match to the users of the music locker without having to upload files. Google provides large amounts of storage and free-of-charge scan-and-match features.

Amazon was the first of the significant players to launch their cloud music locker service at the end of March 2011 and the first to stop it on April 30, 2018. Amazon Music was launched without getting a new music streaming license, which disrupted major record labels. Google launched their service less than a month and a half later, also without obtaining a new license. Apple negotiated with major record labels for new licenses before launching their service six months after Google. Amazon and Google eventually negotiated licenses before launching their scan-and-match feature.

For streaming services where a person can not upload their own music, but is limited to music provided by the service, such as Pandora Radio and Spotify, see Comparison of streaming music service on demand. See the article also for information on subscription streaming services provided by the four companies below (Google Play Music All Access, Apple's Apple Music, Amazon's Prime Music, and Microsoft's Groove Music Pass).

The main difference between these services is that Google offers massive scan-and-match and storage as a cost-free feature, while others typically offer limited or unlimited storage space and scan and match only to annual fees. For users with large libraries, Amazon offers the most storage space for a reasonable annual fee.

Amazon does not allow podcasts, ringtones, or audiobooks to upload. Apple does not allow audiobooks or podcasts to upload.
