Cartoon Network (abbreviated as CN since 2004) is an American cable and basic satellite TV channel owned by Turner Broadcasting System, a subsidiary of Time Warner, a division of AT & amp; T. The company was founded by Betty Cohen and launched on October 1, 1992.

The channel mainly broadcasts animated shows, mostly children's programs, ranging from action to animated comedy. It operates daily from 6 am to 8 pm. (ET) and is primarily aimed at young children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 15, and targets older adolescents and adults with adult content during the late-night block of Adult Swim, who are treated as separate entities for promotional purposes and as a separate channel by Nielsen for assessment purposes. Spanish audio tracks for certain programs can be accessed via the second audio programming (SAP); some cable and satellite companies offer Spanish feeds as separate channels by removing the main English audio tracks. This is also a Turner-owned Boomerang channel.

Beginning in January 2016, Cartoon Network is available to approximately 94.0 million paid television households (80.7% of households with television) in the United States.

Histori

Development

On August 4, 1986, Ted Turner Broadcasting System acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists from Kirk Kerkorian; Due to concerns over the company's debt burden, on October 17, 1986, Turner was forced to sell the MGM back to Kerkorian after only about 74 days of ownership. However, Turner kept many MGM films and television libraries made before May 1986 (as well as several United Artists libraries) and formed Turner Entertainment Co.

On October 3, 1988, the cable channel Turner Network Television was launched and has received an audience with its extensive library of movies. At this time, Turner's animation library includes the MGM cartoon library, pre-1948 color of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melody, Harman-Ising Merrie Melodies i- shorts (except Lady, Play your Mandolin! ), and Fleischer Studios/Famous Studios Popeye cartoons .

In 1991, Turner Entertainment bought Hanna-Barbera Productions animation studio for US $ 320 million. On 18 February 1992, Turner Broadcasting System announced its plan to launch Cartoon Network as an outlet for Turner's large library.

1990s

On October 1, 1992, Cartoon Network plays "The Star Spangled Banner" (which is a tradition every time a new Turner-owned network is launched) and a video of someone putting dynamite in a field and then blowing dynamite up; The channel launch then took place on that day and was guided by cartoon character MGM Droopy in a special event called Droopy Guide to the Cartoon Network , where the first cartoon on the network, The Great Piggy Bank Robbery , indicated. Initial programming on the channel consisted only of reruns of Warner Bros. classic cartoons (pre-1948 Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies ), 1933-1957 Popeye cartoons, MGM cartoons, and Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Initially, cable providers in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Detroit brought the channel. By the time the network was launched, Cartoon Network had an 8,500 hour cartoon library. Since its launch until 1995, network broadcasters said the network name with the word "The" was added before "Cartoon Network", thus calling the "The Cartoon Network" network. As the network debuted, Cartoon Network also operates a programming block (containing cartoons) broadcast on TNT, titled "Cartoon Network on TNT".

Cartoon Network is not the first cable channel to rely on cartoons to attract viewers; However, it is the first 24 hours single-genre channel with animation as its main theme. The Turner Broadcasting System has opposed previous conventional policies by launching CNN, a channel that provides 24-hour news coverage. This concept was previously considered unlikely to attract enough audiences to be very profitable, but the CNN experiment has been successful and Turner hopes that Cartoon Network will also find success.

Initially, the channel will broadcast cartoons 24 hours a day. Most of the short cartoons aired in a half hour or hour package, usually separated by a character or studio - Down Wit 'Droopy D that airs old Droopy Dog shorts, The Tom and Jerry Show > presenting classic cat and mouse teams, and Bugs and Daffy Tonight providing classic Looney Tunes shorts. Late Night Black and White shows early black and white cartoons (mostly from Fleischer Studios and Walter Lantz cartoons from the 1930s, as well as Merrie Melodies and MGM black and white cartoons), and ToonHeads i> will show you three shorts with the same theme and give you trivia about cartoons. There was also an afternoon cartoon block called High Noon Toons, which was guided by a cowboy hand puppet (an example of the simplicity and imagination of the network in the early years). The majority of the classic animations featured on Cartoon Network no longer air regularly, with the exception of Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes.

The challenge for Cartoon Network is to overcome the low penetration of existing cable systems. When launched on October 1, 1992, the channel was only carried by 233 cabling systems. However, it benefits from package deals. New customers for TNT and TBS twin channels can also gain access to Cartoon Network through the deal. The high ranking Cartoon Network over the next few years caused more cabling systems including it. By the end of 1994, Cartoon Network had become "the fifth most popular cable channel in the United States".

During the first few years of Cartoon Network's existence, programming intended for the channel will also be broadcast simultaneously on TBS and/or TNT, both of which are still full-service cable networks carrying different programming genera, to improve '(and Cartoon Network's) exposure ; examples include the Real Adventure of Jonny Quest , Cartoon Planet , SWAT Kats: Radical Squadron , and 2 Dumb Dogs >.

The network's first exclusive original show was The Moxy Show, the first animated anthology series aired in 1993. The first series produced by Cartoon Network was the Coastal Coast Ghost Room in the year 1994, but the show consisted mostly of "recycled animation cells" from the Hanna-Barbera archive, which was an ironic demolition of a talk show. It features live action guests, mostly consisting of celebrities who have passed their prime or counter-cultural figures. A joke is that the production cost is dubbed "minimal". The series finds its audience among young adults who value the "hip" perspective.

Kevin Sandler thinks Space Ghost Coast to Coast plays a role in building Cartoon Network's appeal for older viewers. Space Ghost, a super-1960s superhero by Hanna-Barbera, was re-established as a talk show parody star. This is arguably the first time the network has revived "classic animated icons" in an entirely new context for comedic purposes. Adults who have stopped enjoying their original work taking on the characters can find entertainment in their "new context of irony and self-reference". Promotional shorts like "Scooby-Doo Project", a parody of The Blair Witch Project, provide similar care to Scooby's gang. However, there are less successful attempts at such revivals. A Day in the Life of Ranger Smith and Boo Boo Runs Wild (1999) is a short cartoon featuring a new take on the Yogi Bear supporting cast by John Kricfalusi. Their style of humor, sexual content and the sound tone of the source material are somewhat mismatched among the rest of Cartoon Network events, and networks rarely find a place for them in their programming.

In 1994, the new division of Hanna-Barbera Cartoon Network Studios was established and started production at What is a Cartoon! (also known as World Premiere Toons and Cartoon Cartoon i>). The show debuted in 1995, offering original animated shorts assigned from Hanna-Barbera and various independent animators. The network promotes this series as an attempt to return to the "classic days" of studio animation, offering full animator control, high budget, and no limited animation. The project was pioneered by Cartoon Network executives, plus John Kricfalusi and Fred Seibert. Kricfalusi is the creator of The Ren & amp; Stimpy Show and served as network advisor, while Seibert was once one of the driving forces behind Nickelodeon Nicktoons and will continue to produce similar animation anthology series Oh Yeah! Cartoons and Random! Cartoons .

Cartoon Network was able to assess the potential of certain shorts to serve as a pilot for the spin-off series and signed a contract with its creators to create an ongoing series. Dexter's Laboratory is the most popular short series by polls held in 1995 and finally became the first spinoff of What is Cartoon! in 1996. The other three series based on shorts made its debut from 1997 to 1999: Johnny Bravo , Cow and Chicken , I Am Weasel (the latter two as segments of the same show; I Am Weasel then spin off into separate events), The Powerpuff Girls , The Cowardly's Courage Dog , and Mike, Lu & amp. ; Og . The unrelated series Ed, Edd Eddy was also launched in 1999, creating a critically acclaimed lineup of events. Many of these series are aired under the "Cartoon Cartoon" brand, aired on all network schedules and clearly on Cartoon Cartoon Friday, which became the marquee night for the premiere of new episodes and series that began on June 11, 1999.

This original series is intended to attract a wider audience than the average Saturday morning cartoon. Linda Simensky, the original animation vice president, reminds adults and teenage girls that cartoons can appeal to them as well. Kevin Sandler's article states that these cartoons are less "grim" than their counterparts at Comedy Central and less "socially responsible" than their Nickelodeon counterparts. Sandler points to a strange rebellion, high excessive level and self-awareness of the overall output, each individual series administered.

In 1996, Cartoon Network decided to broadcast a pre-school program and broadcast it every Sunday morning, such as hiring a Children's Television Workshop, Sesame Street Maker on PBS Kids, to create an event called Big Bag , live-action/live television programs aimed at pre-school viewers, as well as Small World , children's animation anthology shows and variety shows, featuring several segments of the TV Program animation is intended for preschoolers from several countries around the world except Japan, China, and Korea. Big Bag ran through 1998, and Small World ran until 2001.

In 1996, Turner Broadcasting System merged with Time Warner (ironically, the heir of Time Warner Warner Communications had created the Nickelodeon rival, now owned by Viacom, in 1977). The merger incorporates ownership of all Warner Bros. cartoons, allowing post-July 1948 and the previous black-and-white cartoons that Sunset owned (released by Warner Bros.s in the 1960s) to display on the network. Although most of the post-July 1948 cartoons were still contracted to be shown on Nickelodeon and ABC, the network would not broadcast it until September 1999 (from Nickelodeon) and October 2000 (from ABC); however, the majority of post-July 1948 cartoons were featured on broadcast networks now WB's The Kids 'WB block started airing on Cartoon Network in January 1997. New animation production by Warner Bros.' animated subsidiaries are also beginning to appear on the network - mostly reruns of shows that have been aired on WB Kids and some from Fox Kids, along with certain new programs like Justice League .

The Cartoon Network program will not be available in Canada until 1997 when a Canadian special channel called Teletoon and its French-language partners is launched.

In 1997, Cartoon Network launched a new action block titled Toonami. The initial formation consists of the 1980s re-impressions of Robotech and Thundercats . However, new shows were introduced and they consisted of action and anime cartoons, such as Sailor Moon , Tenchi Muyo! , Gundam Wing , and Dragon Ball Z . Toonami was entertained by Moltar from the franchise Space Ghost until 1999, where Toonami was then hosted by his own original character, muscular teen robot named TOM. During the same year, a bumper series featuring Powerhouse instrumental was introduced. This bumper runs from 1997 to 2004.

2000s

A new original series aired in 2000: Sheep in the Big City . On April 1st, Cartoon Network launched a digital cable and satellite channel known as Boomerang, which is separated from one of their programming blocks featuring animated retro series and shorts.

Three new original series aired in 2001: Time Squad, Samurai Jack, and Grim & amp; Evil . On June 18, Betty Cohen, who had served as president of Cartoon Network since its founding, left because of a creative dispute with Jamie Kellner, then head of Turner Broadcasting. On August 22, Jim Samples was appointed as general manager and Executive Vice President of the network, replacing Cohen. Adult Swim made its debut on September 2nd, with episodes of Movies House ; the block was aired on Sunday night, with a replay on Thursday. The initial formation consists of Harvey Birdman: Lawyer at Law , Sealab 2021 , The Brak Show , Aqua Teen Hunger Force , and Space Ghost Coast to Coast .

In 2002, What happened... Robot Jones? and Codename: Kids Next Door are showing; the first was short-lived, but the latter became a networking giant in the mid-2000s. The first theatrical film based on the Cartoon Network series, The Powerpuff Girls Movie , was released on July 3, 2002. The film received positive reviews from critics and grossed $ 16.4 million globally for a budget of $ 11 million. On October 1 of that year, Cartoon Network celebrated their tenth anniversary, with a montage featuring various network phases over the years.

2003 saw the debut of The Grim Adventures of Billy & amp; Mandy and Evil Con Carne , both are spinoffs Grim & amp; Evil . On October 3, the cartoon block of the Cartoon Fridays was rebooted in live-action format as "Friday", hosted by Tommy Snider and Nzinga Blake (2003-2004), the last being replaced by Tara Sands (2005-2007). It featured several new Cartoon Network series, most of which did not include the "Cartoon Cartoon" sub-brand. Acquired shows start increasingly with Totally Spies! the following year in the fall.

In 2004, Cartoon Network aired three new original series: Megas XLR , Foster's House for Imaginary Friends , and , and Lyoko Code (which is also a series obtained). On June 14, Cartoon Network changed its name, which included the latest version of the original logo (with a fixed check plot and "C" and "N" being central) and a new slogan, "This is Cartoon Network!" The bumper that was introduced as part of the name change featured 2D cartoon characters from his interacting show in CGI city consisting of sets of their performances. These bumper runs from 2004 to 2007. Today, almost all of the classic Cartoon Network programs have been moved to the Boomerang sister network to make way for new programming.

2005 saw the debut of four more original series: The Life and Times of Juniper Lee Camp Lazlo , My Gym Partner is a Monkey , and < i> Ben 10 . On August 22, Cartoon Network launched a block devoted to a preschool demography known as Tickle-U ; shows in the block including Gordon the Garden Gnome , Harry and His Dinber Full of Dinosaur , Peppa Pig , Tales Firehouse , and Gerald McBoing-Boing . This block was largely unsuccessful and discontinued in 2007. From 2005 to 2008, most of the old Cartoon Cartoon networks (such as Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls) can be seen in segment on the half-hour block known as The Cartoon Cartoon Show .

After its predecessor, What is Cartoon! , Cartoon Network created an all-new animated short series consisting of oversized shorts, pilots, college shorts, or even shorts made for the show itself. The show is called Sunday Pants ; was first aired on October 2, 2005. Sunday Pants varied on different types of animations, from traditional hand-drawn animations to Flash, or even CGI, perhaps making it similar to other shows like Liquid Television on MTV or KaBlam! in Nickelodeon. The show was made by Craig "Sven" Gordon and Stuart Hill, and was produced at Spitfire Studios. This show has a concept similar to What Cartoon! , except that the shorts are 1-3 minutes long and the event is squeezed into 23 minutes (no ads). There are animations and live-action intervals between shorts. The live action is performed by American band The Slacks, while the animated animated by WeFail. The event lasted for less than a month, with its last airing on October 23, 2005. In January 2006, the show was announced to be back months after but said again it never came and the final result was canceled.

Two new Cartoon Network series that aired in 2006: Squirrel Boy and Class of 3000 . Three films made for TV debuted this year: Codename: Kids Next DoorÃ, - Operation ZERO , Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Good Wilt Hunting , and Re-Animated , the latter is the first live-action TV movie network and collaboration between live-action and animation.

Samples resigned from his post on February 9, 2007, following fears of a bomb in Boston caused by the remaining packages around the city that are part of an outdoor marketing campaign promoting the Aqua Teen Hunger Force series of Aqua Teen Hunger Force . On May 2, Stuart Snyder was crowned as a substitute for Samples. On September 1st, the network display has been changed, with bumper and station ID themed The Hives, "Fall is Just Something That Grown-Ups Invented." 2007 saw the debut of Out of Jimmy's Head, the spin-off of the Re-Animated movie and the first Cartoon Network live-action series. 2007 also saw the debut series of Chowder . At the end of 2007, the Network began broadcasting programs from Canadian channels like YTV and Teletoon, including George of the Jungle , 6teen , Storm Hawks , League of Super Evil , Chaotic , Bakugan Battle Brawlers , Stoked , and Total Drama > series. Every October 2007-2010, Cartoon Network also re-runs 40 episodes of the former Fox Kids Goosebumps series.

Cartoon Network announced in early 2008 that it was working on a new project called The Cartoonstitute , led by animator Craig McCracken as executive producer and Rob Renzetti as a supervisor producer. Both report to Rob Sorcher, who created the idea. It will work similar to What is Cartoon! , by creating at least 150 animated pieces in 20 months. Cartoonstitute was finally canceled, and out of all shorts, two or three, Regular Show , Secret Mountain Fort Awesome and Uncle Grandfather , was chosen, after animator Craig McCracken (creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) left the network after 15 years in 2009. In September 20, 2008, Cartoon Network ended Toonami after 11 years running. From 2008 to 2010, Cartoon Network airs animated shorts that act as an interstitial among programs, called Wedgies , which include The Talented Mr. Bixby, Nacho Bear, Big Baby and The Bremen Avenue Experience. On July 14, 2008, the network took on a fresh look made by Tristan Eaton and animated by Crew972. The bumper in that era has a white character without a face named Noods, based on DIY toy, Munny. These characters have many variations that make them look like characters from various CN events. The default network logo is converted to white, adopting different colors based on occasions in the same style.

In June 2009, Cartoon Network unveiled a live-action reality show block called "CN Real", featuring programs like The Othersiders Survive This , BrainRush , Destroy Destroy , Dude, What Will Happen and Bobb'e Say . Maps Cartoon Network

Pemrograman

Cartoon Network programming currently includes original animated series such as Adventure Time , The Amazing World of Gumball , and Steven Universe , as well as programming obtained from the studio others, which in January 2018 included Lego Ninjago: Master of Spinjitzu , Teen Titans Go! , Justice League Action , and Unikitty . In the past, Cartoon Network has also produced live-action programming, such as live-action hybrid/Out of Jimmy's Head animation and The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange, and performances such as Level Up , Tower Prep, and Extraordinary Crew .

In addition, Cartoon Network reproduced various cartoons of Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, which have continued to spin since the network's launch in 1992. In the early days, Cartoon Network benefited from having access to a large collection of animated programming, including the Warner Bros. library ( Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies ), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ( Tom and Jerry > and other series), and Hanna-Barbera ( The Flintstones , Scooby-Doo , Snorks , and others). Turner's ownership from Hanna-Barbera gives network access to an established animation studio, something that Nickelodeon's main rival has never had. Most of these series were removed in 1999 and moved to Boomerang in 2000.

Original series

Many of Cartoon Network's original programs come from an internal studio network, Cartoon Network Studios. Beginning as a division of Hanna-Barbera, the studio will produce some of the original original series of networks, including Dexter Laboratories, Cattle and Chicken, I Am Weasel , Johnny Bravo , and The Powerpuff Girls . Cartoon Cartoon was once a brand for the original Cartoon Network animated television series, but was rarely used by the network in 2003. The name was eventually discontinued in 2008.

Block programming

In the early 2000s, Cartoon Network has created programming blocks devoted to a variety of age demographics. Events broadcast during the morning have preschoolers as their target audience and most have prosocial behaviors as themes. The Toonami programming block, which is shown later on, mostly includes anime events and its target audience is teenagers and teenagers. Most prime time shows include classic cartoons, featured as part of The Tex Avery Show, The Chuck Jones Show and The Bob Clampett Show. Preschool programming was discontinued in 2008.

Blocking of current program

Marketing

Cartoon Network shows with established fan followers, such as Dexter's Laboratory , enabling the network to pursue licensing agreements with companies interested in selling items related to the series. For example, an agreement with Kraft Foods leads to in-store advertising for products related to Cartoon Network. The network also works on cross promotional campaigns with both Kraft and Tower Records. In product development and marketing, the network has benefited from its relationship with Time Warner's parent company, enabling mutually beneficial relationships with various subsidiaries.

Time Warner Cable, a former cable subsidiary of the parent company (separated from Time Warner in 2009), distributes Cartoon Network as part of its package. Turner Broadcasting System, a subsidiary that oversees Time Warner's various networks, helps cross-promote Cartoon Network events and is sometimes set up to exchange certain events between networks. For example, Samurai Jack , one of CN's original shows, sometimes seen on Kids 'WB (which was discontinued on May 24, 2008), while Cardcaptors , anime is licensed by Kids' WB, sometimes seen on Cartoon Network. In each case, the swap is intended to cultivate a shared audience for two networks. Time Inc., a former subsidiary overseeing the company's parent magazine, ensured favorable coverage of Cartoon Network and advertising space throughout its publications. Printed ads for CN events can appear in magazines such as Time , Entertainment Weekly and Sports Illustrated Kids to Time Inc. separated from Time Warner on June 9, 2014. AOL, the company's former sibling for Time Warner that includes Internet services, helps promote Cartoon Network online shows by offering exclusive content for certain animated series, online sweepstakes, and display ads for CN.

Warner Home Video, a home video subsidiary, distributes VHS tapes, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs featuring Cartoon Network events. Select Warner Bros. Family Entertainment VHS releases come with cartoon bonuses from Cartoon Network. Rhino Entertainment, a former record label subsidiary of the parent company (separated from Time Warner in 2004), distributes tapes and CDs with Cartoon Network-related music. These products are also available through Warner Bros. Studio Store. DC Comics, a comic book subsidiary, publishes a series featuring Powerpuff Girls, which shows it can handle other CN related characters. Warner Bros, a film studio subsidiary, released The Powerpuff Girls Movie in 2002. Kevin Sandler considers the possibility that the film will find its way to HBO or Cinemax, two subsidiaries of television networks that regularly broadcast widescreen movies.. Sandler also saw book relationships through Warner Books, as it was the only field of marketing that had not been covered in 2001.

Edit programming

Cartoon Network, during its history, broadcasted most of the Warner Bros. animated cartoons originally created between the 1920s and 1960s, but its networks edit scenes depicting gunshots, alcohol consumption, cowboys and Indian jokes, tobacco, and politically incorrect humor. Unedited versions are saved from both broadcasting and extensive releases in the video market. Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs (1943), politically incorrect but highly respected, have been omitted entirely, while The Scarlet Pumpernickel (1950) and Feed the Kitty (1952), both of which are considered good, have their heavily edited endures due to violence.

There was media attention in June 2001 over the network's decision regarding further omissions from broadcasting. Cartoon Network previously scheduled a 49-hour marathon annually known as Bugs June promising to broadcast each Bugs Bunny with short animations in chronological order. The network was originally intended to include 12 shorts for the 2001 show of the marathon (some of them part of the Eleven Melissa and Elevensely Loaded Tuned Looney Tunes list effectively distributed from the distribution) that had become controversial for using ethnic stereotypes, even though it was broadcasting through the middle of the night to make sure some children watch, with an introduction to their historical value as representatives of other times. The parent of the networking company, however, considers the possibility that there will be complaints about racial incompetence. This results in the 12th being omitted in its entirety. Laurie Goldberg, vice president of public relations, defended the decision, stating, "We are leaders in animation, but we are also one of the top rated public entertainment networks." There are certain responsibilities that come with it.
