Blogger is a blog publishing service that allows multi-user blogs with timed entries. It was developed by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. The blogs are hosted by Google and generally accessed from the blogspot.com subdomain. Blogs can also be served from user-specific domains (such as www.example.com) by using DNS facilities to redirect domains to Google servers. Users can have up to 100 blogs per account.

Until May 1, 2010, Blogger also allows users to publish blogs to their own web hosting server, via FTP. All such blogs must be changed to use a subspecial blogspot.com, or direct their own domain to Google servers via DNS.

History

On August 23, 1999, Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs. As one of the earliest blog-publishing tools devoted, it is credited to help popularize the format. In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Google under undisclosed terms. The acquisition allows premium features (which Pyra alleges) to be free. In October 2004, Pyra Labs co-founder, Evan Williams, left Google. In 2004, Google purchased Picasa; it integrates Picasa and the photo sharing utility Hello to Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs.

On May 9, 2004, Blogger introduced a big redesign, adding features like templates that meet web standards, individual archive pages for posts, comments, and posts via email. On August 14, 2006, Blogger launched the latest version in beta, codenamed "Invader", along with a gold release. It migrates users to Google servers and has several new features, including interface languages in French, Italian, German and Spanish. In December 2006, this new version of Blogger did not use the beta. As of May 2007, Blogger has completely migrated to Google-operated servers. Blogger ranked 16th in the top 50 domain list in terms of number of unique visitors in 2007.

On February 24, 2015, Blogger announced that by the end of March it will no longer allow users to post sexually explicit content, unless nudity offers "substantial public benefits," for example in "artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific context." On February 28, 2015 , accounting for a severe backlash from long-term bloggers, Blogger reversed its decision to ban sexual content, returning to previous policies that allow explicit images and videos if blogs are marked as "adult".

Redesign

As part of the redesign of Blogger in 2006, all blogs linked to a user's Google Account are migrated to Google servers. Blogger claims that the service is now more reliable due to server quality.

As migration to Google servers, several new features are introduced, including label organizations, drag-and-drop template editing interfaces, read permission (for personal blogging) and new Web feed options. In addition, blogs are updated dynamically, compared to rewriting HTML files.

In a service version called Blogger in Draft, new features are tested before being released to all users. New features are discussed in the official blog of the service. In September 2009, Google introduced a new feature into Blogger as part of its tenth anniversary celebration. Features include a new interface for post editing, better image handling, Raw HTML Conversions, and other Google Docs based implementations, including:

  • Added location to post via geotagging.
  • Send timestamps during publication, not on original creations.
  • Resize the post editor's vertical. The size is stored in per-user preferences, per-blog.
  • Edit links in writing mode.
  • Full Safari 3 support and fidelity on Windows and macOS.
  • New Preview dialog that displays posts in width and letters that are closer to what is viewed in the published view.
  • Placeholder image for tags so that embeds can be moved in writing mode.
  • New toolbar with Google aesthetics, faster load time, and "undo" and "redo" buttons, also adds full justification buttons, rebuke buttons, and an expanded color palette.

In 2010, Blogger introduced a new template and redesigned its website. The new post editor was criticized for being less reliable than its predecessor.

Available languages

By the end of 2016, Blogger is available in this language: Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, Basque, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Hong Kong), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, United States), Estonia, Philippines, Finland, France, Galicia, Germany, Greece, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Malayalam Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain), Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkey, Ukraine, Urdu, Vietnam, and Zulu.

Country-specific blogger address

Starting February 2013, Blogger began integrating user blogs with multiple country-specific URLs. For example, exampleuserblogname.blogspot.com will automatically be switched to exampleuserblogname.blogspot.ca in Canada, exampleuserblogname.blogspot.co.uk in the UK. Blogger explains that by doing this they can manage blog content more locally so that if there is inappropriate material that violates certain country laws, they can remove and block access to the blog for that country through specified ccTLD while retaining access through other ccTLD addresses and the default Blogspot.com URL. If blogs using country-specific URLs are removed, it is technically still possible to access the blog via Redirect No Country Redirect by entering the URL using a regular Blogspot address and adding/ncr after.com.

This redirect has privacy implications for anonymous users: those who share links to Blogger sites acquired from their web browser's address bar may inadvertently disclose the country where they are currently - unless they are deceptive (eg using a VPN service located in another country) or overwrite state detection, or manually edit links to refer to blogspot.com before sharing them.

Available designs

Blogger allows its users to choose from different templates and then customize it. Users can also choose to create their own templates using CSS. The new design template, known as "Dynamic View", was introduced on August 31, 2011 with Dynamic Views introduced on September 27, 2011. It was created with AJAX, HTML5, and CSS3. Time to load is 40 percent shorter than traditional templates, and allows users to present blogs in seven different ways: classics, flipcards, magazines, mosaics, sidebars, snapshots, and timeslide. The reader still has the option of choosing a preferred view when the blog owner has set the default view. Multiple widgets (e.g., Label, Profile, Link Link, Subscription Link, Followers, and Blog Archive, etc.) available for Dynamic Views; Other templates are selected by blogger.

In April 2013, Blogger updated its HTML template editor which has several fixes to make it easier for users to edit the blog's source code. Editors are updated with syntax highlighting, line numbers and jump-to-widget buttons for easy code editing.

For more than half a year, users experience bug-induced interruptions that cause special CSS and page navigation often do not load correctly. This happens because the JavaScript routine creates the page before it loads. A blogger user fixes the template and publishes the fix.

Integration

  • The Google Toolbar has a feature called "BlogThis!" which allows toolbar users with Blogger accounts to post a link directly to their blog.
  • "Blogger for Word" is an add-in for Microsoft Word that allows users to save Microsoft Word documents directly to Blogger blogs, as well as edit their posts both online and offline. In January 2007, Google said "Blogger for Word is currently not compatible with the new version of Blogger", and they declare no decision made about supporting it with the new Blogger. However, Microsoft Office 2007 adds native support for various blog systems, including Blogger.
  • Blogger supports Google AdSense services as a way of generating revenue from running blogs.
  • Blogger also started integration with Amazon Associates in December 2009, as a service to generate revenue. It was not publicly announced, but by September 2011 it appears that all the integration options have been removed and the partnership has expired.
  • Windows Live Writer, a standalone app of Windows Live suite, publishes directly to Blogger.
  • Blogger can be optionally integrated with Google.
  • Google comments can be integrated with blogger comments.
  • The Campaigns tab in your Blogger dashboard is linked to AdWords making it easy to create ads.

Blogger on mobile

Blogger has launched a mobile app for users with mobile devices. Users can post and edit blogs, and also share photos and links on Blogger via their mobile device. Not only are sophisticated mobile devices, such as smartphones, being considered, as users can also post blogs through traditional mobile phones via SMS and MMS.

Two major mobile operating systems that Blogger focuses on are Android and iOS. Blogger allows users to edit blogs anywhere through apps and publish blogs or save them as drafts. Quick navigation of posts and drafts can be accessed from the list. Users can attach photos by taking pictures with the Blogger app or selecting images from their photo gallery. Sharing your current location in posts is also possible with the My Location bar tab and adding locations. Users can also share photos and link directly to Blogger.

Blogger also provides a dynamic mobile view for blog compatibility with mobile devices and smartphones. They improve readability accuracy on this smart tool, but editing a blog in a blogger app remains an open issue for the user.

Blocking

Blogger has been blocked for various time periods in the following countries:

  • Cuban
  • Fiji
  • India (some ISPs in 2012 block IP addresses entered into the Federal Extremist Material List in 2011)
  • Iran
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Pakistan
  • People's Republic of China
  • Russian Federation (some ISPs in 2012 block IP addresses incorporated into the Federal Extremist Material List in 2011)
  • Syrian Arabic Republic
  • Turkey
  • Vietnam
  • Yemen

Domain blocking *.blogspot.com by keyword-based Internet filtering system is also encountered because of domains containing "gspot" substrings; however, this can be reduced by excluding the "blogspot.com" section of the URL from a keyword-based Internet filter while *. part of the URL exposed to keyword-based Internet filtering.

Limitations

Blogger has the following restrictions on storage and content bandwidth, per user account:

  • Blog description - max 500 characters; Hyper Text Markup Language markup is not supported
  • Number of blogs - 100 blogs per account
  • Number of labels - 5,000 unique labels per blog (upgrade from original 2,000), 20 unique labels per post (with at most 200 characters)
  • Number of images - Typically, up to 1 GB of total storage, shared with Picasa Web. If you've upgraded to Google, your photos will be stored in Google Photos, where you have 15GB of storage space shared with Gmail and Drive. However, if someone has signed up for a Google account, images that are less than 16 megapixels (4920 x 3264) will not count towards this storage limit. For users who do not sign up for Google, 800 x 800 pixels and the images below will not be included in this storage.
  • Number of posts - There is no limit to the number of posts a blog can have. However, only 50 posts may be published per day before the user is required to go through the review process.
  • Page size - Each page (main page of a blog or archive page) is limited to 1 MB
  • Image size - If posted via Blogger Mobile, limited to 250 KB per image; the posted image is scaled to 1600px
  • Number of pages - There is no limit to the number of pages you can have on one blog
  • Team members (who can write to blogs) - 100 invitations per blog
  • Favicon - Each square image is less than 100 KB
  • Account suspension: if the site violates any terms of service, it may be suspended by Blogger without any notification. Repeated violations may result in suspension of Google accounts.

On February 18, 2010, Blogger introduced "automatic pagination", which limits the number of posts that can be displayed on every page, often causing the number of posts on the main page to be less than user-defined and leading to a hostile response from multiple users.

Private blogs are limited to 100 members.
