Android TV is a version of the Android operating system designed for digital media players. A replacement for Google TV, a user interface feature designed around content discovery and voice search, displays the content collected from various applications and media services, and seamless integration with other latest Google technologies such as Assistant, Cast, and the Knowledge Graph.
The platform was first launched in June 2014, with the launch of Nexus Player, which was launched in October. The platform has also been adopted as a smart TV middleware by a number of display companies including Sony, Sharp and VU TV.

Android TV was first announced in Google I/O in June 2014, as the successor of Google TVs that were not commercially successful. The Verge characterizes it as more compatible with other digital media player platforms, but utilizes the Google Knowledge Graphics project, Chromecast compatibility, greater emphasis on search, closer links to the Android ecosystem (including the Google Play Store and integration with other Android families like Android Wear), and focuses on video game support on platforms with support for Bluetooth gamepads and Google Play Games framework. Some participants received platform development tools, ADT-1; Information reports that ADT-1 is based on a deleted "Nexus TV" launch device that is being developed internally by Google.
Google unveiled its first Android TV device, Nexus Player developed by Asus, at a hardware event in October 2014.

Features
The Android TV platform is an adaptation of the Android OS for set-top boxes and as integrated software on smart TV hardware. The start screen uses a row-based, line-based interface, including a "content discovery" area filled with suggested content, followed by a "Watch Now" row that brings up media content from installed apps. Android TV supports voice input for commands and universal search across various services; the selected device also supports Google Assistant. All Android TV devices support Google Cast, allowing the media to queue up to them from supported apps on both devices in a manner identical to Chromecast. Android TV supports software from the Google Play Store, including media apps and games. Some Android TV devices, such as Nvidia Shield and Razer Forge TV, are also marketed as microconsoles and bundled with a Bluetooth wireless gamepad.

During Google I/O 2014, Google announced that Sharp, Sony and TP Vision will be releasing smart TVs with integrated Android TV by 2015. It is noted that support for handling TV-specific functions, such as switching and input settings, is natively integrated into the platform Android.
Sony launches a series of Smart TV Bravia running Android TV at CES 2015. Sharp Television is available starting June 10, 2015, starting with the release of two models. Philips announced that 80% of their 2015 TVs will run Android TV, the first two models released in June 2015.
Google announced other television hardware partners in January 2016, including Arcelik, Bang & amp; Olufsen, Hisense, RCA, TCL Corporation, and Vestel.
Set-top box
Some television providers have released Android TV-based set-top boxes, including LG UPlus U tvG Woofer and U tvG 4K UHD, 4K Mini Freebox from France Free ISP, and BBox Miami Bouygues Telecom.
Airtel Digital TV released Android TV STB, The Internet TV, in 2017. It features 2 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM, 8 GB ROM, Supports up to 128 GB via SD card, Dolby ATMOS pass-through, 4K P60 Video , Remote Bluetooth Google Voice enabled Search, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, Multiple USB slot (USB 3.0 and USB 2.0), Ethernet port, Supports external game controller, or smartphone as game base, Record content directly to external storage device to memory 2TB.
Dish Network released Android TV device in 2017 called AirTV Player. It is marketed as a companion for the Sling TV service and supports an optional adapter to install the antenna to receive over-the-air television.
Com Hem released the Android TV box in 2018. It comes with a 1.6 GHz quad-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, and remote voice-activated search.
