Google Images is a search service owned by Google that lets users search for image content on the Web. It was introduced in 2001 due to the demand for Versace Jennifer Lopez's green dress image that a regular Google search could not handle. In 2011, the reverse image search function was added to it.

When searching for images, thumbnails of each matching image are displayed. When the user clicks on a thumbnail, the image is displayed in a larger size, and the user can visit the page where the image is used.

History

In early 2007, Google implemented an updated interface for image search, where information about images, such as resolutions and URLs, was hidden until the user moved his mouse over his thumbnail. It's stopped after a few weeks.

On October 27, 2009, Google Images added a feature to its image search that could be used to find similar images.

On July 20, 2010, Google made another update for the Google Image interface, which re-implemented image-hiding detail until the mouse above.

In May 2011, Google introduced a sort of subject-based feature to an overview of the visual category schema of search queries.

A month later, in June 2011, Google Images added a Search feature with Images that enables reverse image searching directly in the image search bar without third-party add-ons. This feature allows users to search for images by dragging and dropping one into the search bar, uploading one, or copy-inserting a URL pointing to the image into the search bar.

New algorithm and censorship allegations (2012-present)

On December 11, 2012, the Google Images search engine algorithm is changed again, in the hope of preventing pornographic images from appearing when non-pornographic search terms are used. According to Google, pornographic images will still appear during the term searched specifically for pornography; otherwise they will not show up. While Google explicitly states that they "do not censor any adult content", it is immediately noted that even when entering terms such as "blow job", or "boob," no explicit results are shown. The only alternative option is to turn on a tighter filter that will refuse to search for the terms mentioned earlier. It also notes that users can no longer exclude keywords from their searches as before.

On February 15, 2018, Google Images' interface is modified to meet completion terms and partnering permissions with Getty Images. The "View image" button (the deep link to the image itself on the source server) has been removed from the image thumbnail. This change is intended to prevent users from viewing full-size images right away (though doing so using browser context menus on embedded thumbnails is not frustrating), and encouraging them to view images in the appropriate context (which may also include attribution and copyright information) on their respective web pages. The "Search by image" button has also been ignored, since reverse image search can be used to find high-resolution copies of copyrighted images. Google also agrees to make copyright rejections in the interface more prominent.

Search by Image feature

Google Images has a Find by Image feature to do a reverse image search. Unlike traditional shooting, this feature eliminates the need to type keywords and terms into the Google search box. Instead, users search by sending a picture as their request. Results can include similar images, web results, pages with images, and different image resolutions.

Search Accuracy by Image results higher if search images are more popular. Additionally, Google Search by Image will offer "the best guess for this image" based on the descriptive metadata of the results.

Algorithm

The general steps that the Image Search performs to get from images sent to returned search results are as follows:

  1. Image analysis - Images submitted are analyzed to find identifiers such as colors, dots, lines, and textures.
  2. Create queries - Different features of this image are used to create a search query.
  3. Match image - The query is matched to the image on the back of Google.
  4. Return results - Search and Google matching algorithms return visually and visually similar images as results to users.
